ABSTRACTThe production of biodiesel is typically based on the catalytic transesterification of vegetable oils or fats. Despite leading to a lower reaction yield, the heterogeneous catalysts avoid a series of future problems such as corrosion, glycerin quality and generated waste. This paper discusses the development of new oxide-based catalyst systems structured to produce biodiesel in a continuous process, replacing the alkaline catalysis. Gathered data objectively show the increasingly advance in researches and in the amount of patents related to biodiesel production; even though the leading countries regarding this matter are China and the U.S.A., Brazil occupies the fifth world position. Moreover, it is shown that heterogeneous catalysis is an valuable alternative route regarding biodiesel production, considering the world's bio sustainable paradigm.
One of the quality parameters of biodiesel is the content of free fatty acids (FFA) which is measured by means of the acid number (IA); since a strong acidity complicates the oil to produce biodiesel reaction. This paper aims to prior art search to determine acid number into biodiesel through the development of electrochemical methods. The research was conducted by mapping patents in different databases as well as databases of scientific articles. It was observed that there are few numbers of patents in the surveyed foundations and publications of scientific articles targeted to the theme, that shows that this promising subject for investment research, development and ownership of technology.
