Evaluation of the polytrauma victim by the nursing staff in an emergency service of Santa Catarina RESUMOObjetivo: Conhecer as ações desenvolvidas pela equipe de enfermagem do serviço de emergência de um hospital privado do sul de Santa Catarina, Brasil, na realização das avaliações primária e secundária de indivíduos vítimas de politraumatismo. Métodos: Pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa do tipo estudo de caso, realizada com doze profissionais de enfermagem. A amostra caracterizou-se como não probabilística intencional. A coleta de dados foi realizada através das técnicas de entrevista semiestruturada e observação participante. A análise dos dados foi desenvolvida por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo. Resultados: A análise dos depoimentos dos profissionais de enfermagem e os resultados da observação evidenciaram que a maioria dos participantes têm compreensão acerca da importância da adoção da regra do ABCDE na avaliação primária -A (Air Way) -permeabilidade das vias aéreas com administração segura do colar cervical; B (Breathing) -respiração; C (Circulation) -busca de sangramentos e controle da circulação; D (Disability) -avaliação neurológica; e E (Exposure) -exposição corporal do paciente à procura de lesões não visualizadas -e sobre a necessidade de avaliação secundária minuciosa da vítima de politraumatismo. Porém, devido à demanda de urgência e agilidade em atendimentos dessa natureza, a regra não é seguida de forma sistemática. Conclusão: Evidenciou-se a preocupação da equipe de enfermagem com os seguintes aspectos: agilidade do atendimento; realização imediata dos exames solicitados; comunicação entre os profissionais do serviço de emergência; percepção adequada do estado geral da vítima; e o acolhimento à vítima e aos seus familiares.
