Ante los diversos fenómenos naturales y antropogénicos que se desarrollan a nivel global se hace necesario el uso de herramientas biotecnológicas que maximicen las capacidades de respuesta de los organismos en sus múltiples entornos. Los hongos micorrizas arbusculares (HMA) son la alternativa óptima para satisfacer la demanda actual del sector agrícola en armonía con el ecosistema; el presente artículo tiene por objetivo corroborar los múltiples beneficios reportados por esta asociación simbiótica a través de una revisión y análisis del estado del arte. La interacción HMA-planta crea tolerancia a factores de estrés abiótico, promueve el crecimiento vegetal y un aumento en la productividad, además existe una especial promoción en el biocontrol de plagas, reporta un incremento en la calidad del suelo y absorción de metales pesados y podría ser una herramienta clave en la mitigación del cambio climático. Los HMA son una opción que permite restablecer el rol ecológico de la microbiología del suelo con los cultivos, con el fin de cumplir con el desarrollo sostenible, propuesto por la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU), que tiene un compromiso común y universal: erradicar la pobreza y fomentar la seguridad alimentaria.
