The use of Twitter as strategic tool for political communication has increased considerably in recent years, particularly during electoral campaigns. The main goal of this paper is to examine the degree of compliance with the principles of dialogue attributed to social media. To achieve this, a quantitative content analysis was carried out on the tweets shared by the main Spanish political parties during the 2015 General Elections. The results show that although a high number of tweets were made by the four political parties during this period, none of them took advantage of the full potential of dialogue on Twitter.
Drawing on the perceptions of the future generation of journalists, this article aims to examine the specific motivations and barriers that encourage or discourage students from starting their own journalistic businesses. The goal is to identify those aspects that most influence entrepreneurial intention in the journalistic field, breaking the data down by gender and course. The methodology uses a quantitative approach based on surveys (n = 219). By applying categories of analysis previously tested in entrepreneurship studies in the business world, it was found that motivation in journalism is related to self-realization, as well as independence and flexibility at work. However, barriers are directly connected to the economic situation and self-confidence in knowledge and skill, despite students receiving training in entrepreneurship. Based on the motivations, Reluctant Entrepreneurs and Convenience Entrepreneurs are the two dominant profiles among journalism students. Based on the barriers, Economically Discouraged Entrepreneurs is the most prominent profile. Females are less self-confident about their innovative ideas and entrepreneurial skills, but males are more disappointed by journalism. Advanced students (third and fourth years of the degree) are also more disappointed by journalism than beginner students (first and second years).
Social media has introduced new parameters that can potentially transform the digital political conversation. Traditionally, in the age of mass communication, public debate was dominated by politicians and journalists. However, digital platforms, primarily Twitter, have allowed other social actors to join the political discussion, trying to influence it. The objective of this research is to establish what factors enable the authority and digital influence of political actors in the public debate on Twitter. We use a big data sample of 127.3 million tweets from the negotiation process around the formation of the Government in Spain. The applied methodology is based on social network analysis and machine learning. The results show that ideology, political initiative, and political career are configured as factors capable of conditioning the authority and influence of political actors in the political conversation on Twitter.
