Storage of 'bluegem' blueberry in controlled atmosphere and cold storage with ethylene scrubbing and inhibitionThe aim of this work was to evaluate storage conditions on the maintenance of the physiochemical qualities in Bluegem blueberry. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized design , with four replicates and the experimental unit consisted of approximately 400g of fruits. Six storage conditions were evaluated as follows: [6] CA with 2.0 kPa O 2 + 10.0 kPa CO 2 with application of 900 μg kg -1 of 1-methilciclopropene. All treatments were stored at 0.5°C (± 0.1°C). Fruit quality was evaluated after seven weeks of storage plus three more days at 20°C (± 0.2°C). The best 'Bluegem' blueberry conservation was achieved in cold storage, which gave the highest titratable acidity, total soluble solids and percentage of firm fruit, lowest ethylene and CO 2 production as well as the highest anthocyanin and total polyphenolic contents. However, the removal of ethylene in the storage room can prolong fruit conservation.
Hortic. bras., v34, n. 4, out. -dez. 2016 horticultura horticultura brasileira brasileira O m o r a n g u e i r o ( F r a g a r i a x ananassa) é bastante cultivado no Brasil.
Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) is a key enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway responsible for biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites, such as anthocyanins, flavanols, and lignins. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of different rootstock/scion combinations on Prunus tree growth, PAL gene expression, and PAL activity in order to identify compatibility of different graft combinations. The study was performed with peach (P. persica cv. Chimarrita) grafted on two peach rootstocks (Capdeboscq and Tsukuba1) and one Japanese apricot (P. mume cv. Umezeiro). Two or three years after grafting, the growth of peach scion on Umezeiro was weak and finally the death of some trees occurred. The peach rootstocks induced vigorous growth without any tree loss through the three years of evaluation. However, PAL activity and expression of PAL encoding genes were higher in Umezeiro as compared to the other rootstocks. These results show that the differential gene expression together with the PAL activity is a promising strategy to predict graft incompatibility.
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different nitrogen fertilizer rates on chemical composition of substrate, vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality and leaf nutrient concentration of Misty and O'Neal blueberry cultivars. It was applied five nitrogen rates. In the years 2008 and 2009 were: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 g plant -1 , whereas, in 2010, due to the growth and development of plants, the rates were: 0; 7.5; 15; 22.5; and 30 g plant -1. The variables analized were: plant height, dry mass of pruning, shoot length, chlorophyll content, yield, fruit mass, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, anthocyanin content, antioxidant activity, total phenolics of fruits, leaf nutrient concentration (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, B, Fe, Mn and Zn), and chemical properties of the substrate. Levels of N reduced the pH, exchangeable Ca and Mg and increased the Al content in the substrate. In leaves, there was an increase in N, P and Fe and a decrease in Ca, Zn, Mn and B. The highest yield was obtained with the estimated rate of 7.37 g plant -1 of N. Regarding functional compounds, there was a linear increase in antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds. It can be concluded that N fertilization with ammonium sulfate, significantly influenced the chemical composition of the substrate, nutrient content of leaves, vegetative growth, yield, and fruit quality of blueberries.Additional keywords: ammonium sulfate; mineral fertilization; pH; Vaccinium.
