with an increase of progressive empty spaces -were observed. According to the studies developed in this paper, the settlements in the interior of the waste mass must be understood as the result of microbial activity and mechanical behavior, since the periods of zero settlements are a consequence of the microbial activity as well as the settlements periods.
RESUMO O monitoramento do metano (CH4) gerado em biorreatores permite avaliar o desenvolvimento da biodegradação anaeróbia dos resíduos sólidos orgânicos (RSO). O objetivo deste artigo foi avaliar as interposições ocasionadas por fatores físico-químicos nas concentrações de metano gerado em um biorreator de bancada preenchido com RSO provenientes de uma escola da cidade de Campina Grande (PB), Brasil. A metodologia empregada na pesquisa consistiu na confecção e instrumentação de um biorreator de bancada de 0,03 m3 de capacidade, no qual foi realizado o monitoramento das concentrações de metano, análise microbiológica e dos parâmetros físico-químicos durante um período de 355 dias. A partir da análise dos resultados, foi constatado que o pH esteve acima de 7,0 durante a maior parte do monitoramento, indicando que a alcalinidade apresentada pelo material utilizado no preenchimento do biorreator foi suficiente para impedir que o acúmulo de ácidos voláteis ocorrido na fase inicial do monitoramento acarretasse a desestabilização do sistema. Dessa forma, foi possível concluir que os parâmetros físico-químicos analisados contribuíram de forma satisfatória para a biodegradação dos resíduos, levando em consideração que as concentrações de metano atingiram os níveis esperados para esse tipo de reator, chegando a valores próximos a 60%.
RESUMO O conhecimento das populações bacterianas responsáveis pela biodegradação dos resíduos sólidos dispostos em aterros sanitários pode levar ao desenvolvimento de alternativas tecnológicas viáveis para o tratamento e a estabilização dos resíduos, resultando em impactos positivos para a operação de aterros, a recuperação de energia, a saúde pública e o meio ambiente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar a diversidade bacteriana associada à biodegradação de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) aterrados em uma célula experimental no município de Campina Grande, Paraíba. O estudo abrangeu as etapas de construção, planejamento estatístico dos bairros de Campina Grande para coleta e preenchimento da célula experimental com RSU. As amostras de DNA das bactérias encontradas nos RSU foram extraídas com o Kit Power Soil DNA Isolation. Em seguida, foi realizada a análise genética com primers universais para bactérias via reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) e eletroforese em gel de gradiente com desnaturante (DGGE), e, por fim, sequenciamento genético (região 16S do RNAr). Após o exame microbiológico, as principais bactérias associadas aos táxons foram: Uncultured Pseudomonas sp, Uncultured bacterium, Enterobacter sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae e Uncultured Bacillus sp., sugerindo que nos RSU existem representantes ainda desconhecidos e/ou não isolados que estão relacionados aos processos de hidrólise, acidogênese e acetogênese na digestão anaeróbia dos resíduos.
A qualidade do biogás está intrinsicamente associada ao processo biodegradativo e suas relações com o meio interno e externo à massa de resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU). Assim, neste artigo foram analisadas a qualidade do biogás, quanto às concentrações de metano (CH4), dióxido de carbono (CO2) e oxigênio (O2), e do lixiviado gerado em uma célula de RSU, com 62.359.400 kg de resíduos aterrados. A operação da célula durou 5 meses e o monitoramento se iniciou após seu fechamento. As concentrações dos gases e parâmetros analisados apresentaram valores típicos identificados em aterros brasileiros na fase metanogênica, porém com idades distintas. Concentrações de CH4 e CO2 superiores a 50 e 40%, respectivamente, foram verificadas no início do monitoramento. A elevada qualidade do biogás, em um curto intervalo de tempo, sugere que as condições locais, bem como o ambiente interno à massa de RSU, favoreceram o equilíbrio microbiano e a estabilidade do processo biodegradativo.
