Tooth loss is a common dental problem. Impairment of oral functions and masticatory efficiency is a result of tooth loss. The negative effects of tooth loss can be managed by the fixed and removable prosthesis. This study was conducted to determine the influence of gender in selecting prosthesis. This study was a retrospective observational study conducted in a university hospital in Chennai. Data collection was done with the help of the electronic dental record of the university- Dental information archiving software (DIAS). It records all patients data from initial visit to last visit chronologically. This was followed by Excel tabulation. Data was analysed using SPSS Software. The association of study variables was calculated using the Chi-Square test. Within the limits of the study, female patients were willing for replacement of teeth than male patients (55%). There was a significant difference in choosing the type of prosthetic treatment. It was seen that fixed partial denture was chosen over removable prosthesis (59.8%).
Oral hygiene is an important aspect of dental health and is considered to be an essential field as it involves both the oral and general health of the individual. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential and requires knowledge that should be imposed on people by a well-trained health educator. Oral health is not only implied by proper brushing, but also through frequent and regular visits to the dentist which helps in early detection and diagnosis of both oral and general diseases. The present study was conducted to assess the knowledge about oral hygiene and to determine the need to spread awareness on the same. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 9 questions was circulated and the results were interpreted. The present study inferred that most of the people were aware of maintaining proper oral hygiene but however felt that there was a lack of established dental clinics around the urban areas. Further, there was a need to instill the importance of regular dental check-ups and spread awareness on the ill- effects of improper oral hygiene. The study concluded that there was a need to enhance the knowledge of the population on the importance of good oral hygiene and dental check-ups.
Costus igneus, typically known as searing costus, is native to South America ordinarily known as the insulin plant. It is typically grown in gardens mostly as a decorative herb in South India and is further out of control in other areas. It is used in India to combat hyperglycaemia and many other diseases. This survey was performed with the purpose of assessing the knowledge and the awareness about the Costus pictus medicinal plant amongst dental students. A cross-sectional survey was performed with a self-administered questionnaire with ten questions circulated among 100 dental students. The questionnaire assessed the awareness about Costus pictus plant, their medicinal uses, antidiabetic activity, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The responses were recorded and analysed.93% of the respondents were not aware of medical uses of Costus pictus .95% were not aware of antidiabetic activity of Costus pictus .97 % were not aware of the antioxidant activity of Costus pictus. Again 97% were not aware of the antimicrobial activity of Costus pictus. The knowledge and awareness about the medicinal Costus plant were less among dental students and awareness was created about its medicinal uses.
