Introdução: Os dados epidemiológicos em saúde têm como funcionalidade gerar informações para favorecer estatísticas visando melhorar os programas de saúde da população. Para tal, o Brasil conta com o Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade, que é uma plataforma do Ministério da Saúde que armazena dados oriundos da Declaração de Óbito. Com esses dados registrados, é possível levantar estatísticas sobre o que mais causa óbito na população de uma região e quais as entidades que mais notificam as causas básicas de óbito. Analisar a qualidade desses registros ou notificações obituárias pode identificar as reais necessidades sanitárias populacionais e creditar os sistemas de informações de saúde. Objetivo: Avaliar a completude e a qualidade dos registros das causas básicas de óbito no SIM para o Estado de Tocantins. Materiais e Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo, transversal, quantitativo e qualitativo, no qual foram analisados dados secundários do SIM/MS, disponíveis publicamente no site do Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS), que compreendem registros das causas básicas de óbitos não fetais provenientes de todos os cinco possíveis atestantes para o Estado do Tocantins nos anos de 2010 a 2012. Resultados: Foram identificadas falhas, sobretudo no que tange o preenchimento das declarações de óbitos, as quais refletem pouco conhecimento ou falta de capacitação dos profissionais. Conclusão: Os resultados obtidos revelam a necessidade de aprimoramento do processo de coleta de dados epidemiológicos do Brasil, visto a importância do estudo das causas básicas de óbitos, a fim de favorecer o aperfeiçoamento dos programas de saúde do país.
