Alterações sensoriais aumentam consideravelmente com o avanço da idade e podem causar sérios comprometimentos na capacidade do idoso em realizar suas atividades de vida diária. Dentre as alterações sensoriais que acompanham este processo, a deficiência auditiva, conhecida no idoso como presbiacusia, é uma delas.A presbiacusia é decorrente do processo geral de envelhecimento do organismo 1 que pode ser concomitante ao acúmulo de diversos fatores extrínsecos que contribuem para seu surgimento ou agravamento, tais como: uso de medicamentos, exposição repetida a ruídos ao longo dos anos, tabagismo, entre outros.1,2 Essa deficiência auditiva é uma das dificuldades que mais acometem a população idosa, e também uma das mais incapacitantes, 2 podendo afetar cerca de dois terços dos adultos com mais de 70 anos e quatro quintos dos adultos com mais de 85 anos.
