Iniciamos nosso trabalho em cirurgia cardíaca, pesquisando as conseqüências da aplicação de diferentes períodos de "Inflow occlusion" em cães. Logo, construímos uma estreita ligação com pesquisadores e professores do Instituto do Coração da Faculdade de Medicina da USP (INCOR), o que nos despertou a possibilidade de praticar correções intracardíacas. Contudo, para cirurgias cardíacas a céu aberto, o sangue do animal necessita ser desviado do coração, para uma máquina com função de oxigenar, e bombear o sangue novamente para o paciente. A este procedimento dá-se o nome de "circulação extracorpórea" (CEC), e à pessoa responsável pela operação do procedimento, "perfusionista". Inicialmente, contávamos com a ajuda de estagiários do Serviço de Perfusão do INCOR, e iniciamos os primeiros trabalhos com perfusão em cães. Porém, com o tempo, percebemos que a circulação extracorpórea é um procedimento complexo, que proporciona alterações em diversos sistemas orgânicos, e vimos necessidade em ter um veterinário apto a realizar a circulação extracorpórea, que pudesse agregar seus conhecimentos médicos veterinários aos adquiridos. Neste intuito, participamos do Curso de Perfusão oferecido pelo INCOR, para formação de técnicos, com duração de um ano (2000). Aprendemos que a CEC não segue um protocolo único, mas possui regras que definem o procedimento a ser seguido, de acordo com a cirurgia a ser realizada, condições do paciente, e gosto da equipe cirúrgica. Assim, decidimos por escrever esta dissertação, no intuito de compilar, adaptar e disponibilizar aos profissionais veterinários interessados no assunto as informações necessárias para conduzir uma circulação extracorpórea, tecnicamente exeqüível em cães.
