As a number of support programmes for competence improvement are provided to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Korea, it is recommended that these enterprises collaborate with each other. However, without information about other enterprises in the industry that they belong to or are planning to enter, many SMEs f ind it diff icult to look for partners that they can collaborate with. This article focuses on extracting a list of enterprises in a supply chain of a specif ic industry through a business information database and a Korean trademark rights database. Also, it focuses on suggesting a methodology that would show a list of actual deals made between enterprises found through a business deal database. Through these, it becomes possible for SMEs to have knowledge about other enterprises and their previous deals in a supply chain or a system of a specif ic industry. SMEs will thus be able to build a suitable business plan based on such information. Moreover, this article will be helpful for policymakers as it will help them understand the system and characteristics of the industry and come up with a suitable programme for the industry that can support SMEs.
Purpose
– This study aims to contribute to the comprehension of managerial implications in all the new convergences fields: bioinformation technology (BIT), nanoinformation technology (NIT), nanobiotechnology (NBT) and bioinformation–nanotechnology (BINT). The phenomenon of convergence that significantly impacted economies and societies in the information technology era has continued to be combined with new technologies such as nanotechnology and biotechnology. Many countries have tried to seize the initiative to strengthen the future competitiveness, and it become increasingly important for roles of companies to expand applications of the new convergence.
Design/methodology/approach
– From a company-based perspective, the study quantifies leading companies’ degree of influence in each convergence field.
Findings
– However, the result shows that companies’ influences are not mature enough to transfer the initiatives from both the NBT and BINT convergence fields. In addition, this study presents a perceivable framework for companies/institutions by identifying which technological fields the companies/institutions are influential in and what degrees of technological impact are shaped among them. As a result, this allows companies/institutions to recognize their environments squarely.
Originality/value
– This study applied the replacement process that can reinforce the investigation of the extent to which a firm has a significant ability to influence others directly and indirectly. From the methodology perspective, such replacement can intensely display the structure and the extent of competition among firms. Therefore, the results provide an explicit information to understand the overall business situation.

Many organizations release future emerging technologies information because it is very important to companies. However, unfortunately there are few organizations who assess the emerging technologies they thought a few years ago. We made a framework for assessing the brightness of future emerging technologies rapidly and cost-effectively.We came up with 2 new concepts for it. One is product potential and the other is consumption potential. Product potential is relative probability that emerging technology is implemented to real products. It is resulted from analyzing patents related with emerging technology.Consumption potential is relative probability that consumers buy the products. The number of appearances of emerging technology in the mass media is related to consumption potential. We compared the brightness between LED and LCD technologies with proposed evaluating framework, and came to know that LCD has more brightness over LED.
