Pasaulyje didėjant paliatyviosios slaugos poreikiui, vis didesnis dėmesys kreipiamas slaugos studentų, kaip būsimųjų slaugytojų, rengimui. Naujausi slaugos studentų patirties su mirštančiais pacientais tyrimai rodo, kad mokymasis slaugyti mirštančiuosius apima ne tik profesines žinias, bet ir stiprius emocinius išgyvenimus. Tyrimo tikslas – atskleisti slaugos studentų patirtis, slaugant mirštančius pacientus praktikos metu. Atliktas kokybinis tyrimas. Pasirinktas interpretatyvios fenomenologijos tyrimo metodas ir taikytas reflektyvusis hermeneutinis procesas, siekiant suprasti ir interpretuoti fenomeną. Duomenų rinkimo metodas – giluminis interviu. Tyrime dalyvavo 11 antro kurso bendrosios praktikos slaugos studijų programos studenčių. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad studentams svarbus ne tik praktinių įgūdžių tobulinimas praktikos metu, bet ir kylančių emocijų, susiduriant su žmogaus mirtimi, apmąstymas. Praktikos atlikimas slaugant mirštančiuosius gal būti įvardijamas kaip asmeninis iššūkis, skatinantis vertybinių nuostatų pokyčius. Paciento kančios matymas, visiška paciento priklausomybė nuo personalo, studento nemokėjimas psichologiškai palaikyti paciento ir jo artimųjų gali būti įvardijami kaip pagrindiniai sunkumai, slaugant mirštančius pacientus. Pagrindinai veiksniai, lengvinantys mokymąsi slaugyti pacientus, yra personalo ir mentoriaus pagalba bei parama, situacijos reflektavimas. Studentų mokymąsi labiausiai sunkino paciento nesusitaikymas su mirtimi. Svarbus ne tik studentų gebėjimas savarankiškai prisitaikyti prie stresinių situacijų slaugant mirštančius pacientus, bet ir personalo bei mentoriaus pagalba adaptuojantis.
