INFLUENCE OF MANITOL-INDUCED WATER STRESS ON CANOLA SEED GERMINATION AND SEEDLING GROWTHABSTRACT -The present research was carried out to evaluate the germination of Hyola 401 Hybrid canola seeds and seedling growth under manitol-induced water stress. Germination (first and final count); seedling vigor classification; speed of germination; primary root and hypocotyl length; seedling dry weight and average growth rate tests were performed in manitol solutions plus 0.2% of Vitavax-Thiram fungicide at the osmotic potentials of 0 (control); -0.25; -0.5; -1.0; and -1.5MPa. Results showed that lower (more negative) osmotic potentials reduced significantly seed germination and seedling growth. First and final counts of germination, seedling dry biomass and seedling relative growth rate were affected in the same proportion as the concentration of osmotic solutions increased. The -1.0MPa osmotic potential level was considered critical to seed germination.
Tomato is considered one of the most sensitive crops regarding 2,4-D drift. In many cases, such susceptibility has led to important restrictions in the use of 2,4-D based products. Field experiments were carried out for two consecutive years in tomato, by applying sublethal doses of 2,4-D (ranging from 0.42 to 13.44 g a.i. ha(-1)) directly to plants, at different stages of growth, as a simulation of eventual drifts to the crop. The range of rates was based on the assumption of a 0.0625-2.0% drift level of a 1 L ha(-1) of the most common formulated herbicides. For this crop, the range of rates between 0.42 and 13.44 g a.i ha(-1) applied at the beginning of flowering caused a linear crop reduction. On the other hand, rates < or = 13.44 g a.i. ha(-1) applied after full development of fourth truss stage or latter had no effect on crop yield or development. For tomato, tolerance to 2,4-D strongly increases with plant age.
ABSTRACT. New methodology of evaluating herbicide selectivity to sugarcane crop. The present research aimed at evaluating the selectivity of herbicides applied to sugarcane, Saccharum spp (Poaceae), without interference from weeds and using twofold checks. Data were analyzed in two different ways: in the first case, areas treated with herbicides were compared to the average value of all twofold checks. In this case, which is the conventional method of study in selectivity, no herbicides affected either growth on yield characteristics, leading to the conclusion that all herbicides applied were selective to sugarcane. However, in the second way of analyzing data, when each herbicide was compared to the average values of its own twofold check, a quite different behavior of most herbicides was observed. The majority of the herbicides used was considered to be non selective to sugarcane crop.Key words: Saccharum spp, tolerance, experimental methods.
