Classical methods of analysis played a fundamental role in the development of Chemistry and the chemical industry. They have been tools for analytical procedures since the 18th century, remaining useful until today. The technological appeal of the instrumental methods seems to dazzle the incoming generations of chemists who do not recognize the importance of titrimetry. A short description of the development of titrimetry is presented in order to call attention to historical landmarks for teaching and learning activities in Portuguese. A compilation of some current standard analytical methods that employ titrations is presented to illustrate the availability of titrimetry nowadays. Keywords: titrimetry; historical development; current uses. Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified titanium dioxide as potentially carcinogenic. Titanium dioxide is a pigment generally used as opacifying agent in toothpastes, but there is no indication of the percentage of this oxide in these products. In this work, 22 distinct toothpaste samples were calcinated at 800 °C and TiO 2 concentration was determined with energy dispersive X-Ray fluorescence (EDXRF) via fundamental parameter (FP) method. The same samples were irradiated in natura for 100 s and through the correlation of spectra and concentrations formerly determined, a multivariate calibration model was constructed. Eight latent variables described the partial least square regression (PLS) model with average errors of 9.5%, indicating that beyond the peak of titanium, the information of the X-Ray scattering irradiation is also important to minimize errors when using an univariate calibration. As a major advantage, the method allows analysis without pretreatment of the samples, with a throughput of 24 determinations per hour. Keywords: toothpaste, titanium dioxide, X-ray fluorescence, partial least square regression, chemometrics IntroductionAmong the common habits used for tooth conservation, the frequent use of dentifrices, mainly in the form of pastes, can be considered the most practiced. Before being presented as pastes, the first dentifrices were commercialized as powders in 1850, in the United States of America. 1 Toothpaste popularization occurred when it was presented in flexible metallic tubes. 2 Nowadays, the chemical composition of toothpastes varies from one brand to another, and even among several presentations of the same brand. They are composed by substances which act as abrasives, pigments, foam inducers, humectants, thickeners, stabilizers, solvents, sweeteners, therapeutic agents, enamel hardeners, etc. Other substances...
This work reports the use of multivariate calibration models to determine energy values (EV) of industrialized dried vegetable products prepared for human consumption. These methods use energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectra allied to chemometrics of the respective samples to substitute conventional EV determinations that are subject to several laborious steps. The samples are grouped in accordance with their principal raw material (corn, wheat, soy, milk and cassava). The chemometric tools applied reveal that the X-ray scattering spectrum region furnishes the main contribution to the calibration models, where the presence of organic compounds is manifested through small variations in X-ray scattering effects. These results are expected because EV values are based on the organic contents. The EV determination is fast, does not generate residuals and does not involve toxic reagents. The good results of the validation process (deviations <14%) indicate that this is an alternative to conventional analytical methods and is very attractive for routine analysis.
ResumoPortable instruments are excellent choices to perform precision agriculture since they allow in situ information about soil composition. In such a way, results are obtained quickly and inputs can be applied promptly, depending on the local soil characteristics. This study aims to develop a method to measure inorganic elements at in natura soils using a portable EDXRF (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence) equipment and multivariate calibration through Partial Least Square Regression (PLS). Seven certified reference standards are used to build the PLS models for Si, K, Ca, Mn and Fe. Two standards are separated for external PLS validation. Finally, the results show that a maximum of 21% is obtained for relative deviation.
