A educação das crianças do campo constitui-se, na atualidade, um dos principais desafios na construção da Educação Infantil democrática no país. A partir da premissa de que há uma inter-relação entre as condições estruturais de funcionamento da Educação Infantil e as práticas pedagógicas efetivadas no cotidiano das turmas, o objetivo deste artigo é discutir como esses dois aspectos evidenciam-se e se codeterminam no dia a dia de duas instituições de Educação Infantil de assentamentos rurais da reforma agrária. Foi analisado o atendimento em duas pré-escolas de assentamentos rurais do Nordeste paulista, por meio de observação participante e de entrevistas com professoras, famílias e crianças. Percebeu-se que o atendimento à população assentada é permeado por condições e contradições da organização, do tratamento dado pela gestão pública a cada realidade e das características peculiares que as configuram. Concluiu-se que os princípios pedagógicos dependem de uma estrutura de trabalho, que envolve organização do tempo, existência de espaços adequados, equipe suficiente, preparada e valorizada, para se concretizarem e nortearem práticas condizentes com as especificidades da faixa etária e do contexto de vida das crianças de assentamento rural.
