A importante monografia de 1852 em que, entre as diversas formas de melancolia, Lasegue destacou o delfrio de perseguigao, foi o ponto de partida de trabalhos complementares que colocaram esta forma de vesania entre aquelas cujos sintomas, curso e desfechos melhor conhecemos. Basta-nos evocar os nomes de Lasegue, Morel, Foville e Legrand du Saulle e, mais particularmente, o do Sr. J. Falret que exibiu diante da Societe medico-psychologique um quadro tao completo quanto possfvel das fases sucessivas de evolugao dessa doen §a 3. No tocante a outras formas de delfrio melancolico, nossos conhecimentos estao bem longe dessa perfeigao relativa. A melancolia simples, a melancolia com estupor, a melancolia ansiosa, foram descritas com esmero; sabe-se que estas formas sao muitas vezes intermitentes-, que algumas vezes se tornam contfnuas e entao cronicas, mas as caracterfsticas e fases sucessivas do delfrio que se torna cronico nao foram, que eu saiba, objeto de qualquer trabalho equivalente aquele realizado com o delfrio persecutorio. Nessa monografia, proponho-me a expor uma evolufao delirante especial, que me parece ocorrer num expressive niimero desses melancolicos nao-persecutorios, mais particularmente os ansiosos, e fundamentar-se essencialmente nas disposicoes negativas mais comuns desses doentes.
El 28 de julio de 1880 Jules Cotard (1840-1889) presenta a la Societé médico-psychologique un trabajo titulado "Del delirio hipocondríaco en una forma grave de la melancolía ansiosa" [Du délire hypocondriaque dans une forme grave de mélancolie anxieuse] en el que comienza describiendo el caso de una paciente que ha seguido durante varios años junto a Jules Falret, su Jefe en la Clínica des Vanves.
