The objective of this work was to evaluate new composites developed in Brazil and to indicate those which present better potential to initiate an intrapopulation breeding program. Trials were carried out during 2005/2006 cropping season. Treatments included 21 genotypes (hybrid from inbred lines, composites and synthetic) cultivated in two locations (Umuarama and Cidade Gaúcha), both located in Northwest of Paraná State. Grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE) were evaluated by individual and joint analyses of variance. Composites UEM 5, UEM 6 and UEM 7 obtained the highest quality of the PE, with similar values to the check treatments in both locations. GY of genotypes ranged more than popping expansion over locations. Composites UEM 5, UEM 6 and UEM 7 revealed satisfactory potential both PE and GY when evaluated in Umuarama, Paraná State, Brazil.
The present study aimed at pyramiding ASR-resistance genes through microsatellite (SSR) marker-assisted selection (MAS) and demonstrating the pyramiding steps. To obtain the first generation of gene pyramiding, crosses were made between introduced plants (PI's), which have the genes Rpp1, Rpp2, Rpp3, Rpp4, and Rpp5. F 1 plants from the initial crosses were intercrossed to obtain plants with the four resistance genes (second pyramiding generation). Plants selected from this second generation were again intercrossed (third pyramiding generation) to increase the number of pyramided genes. For MAS, we used informative SSR markers in each cross. SSR markers were considered informative when the source resistance allele containing the target gene could be followed in the progeny, even in crosses between hybrids that both contained the same allele. Markers published in the ASR genetic mapping studies and in the consensus map of the soybean were used. We obtained plants containing from 2 to 4 genes pyramided per plant. These plants can be used as a source of multiple resistance in breeding programmes for obtaining soybean varieties with more durable resistance to ASR.
PRECHILING AS A TREATMENT TO OVERCOME DORMANCY OF WHEAT SEEDS HARVESTED AT PHYSIOLOGICAL MATURITYABSTRACT -The wheat breeding program has generated an expressive number of cultivars which differ in sprouting rate of seed still attached to the spike. In order to assess these differences, an experiment was carried out with seeds harvested from two locations, Palotina and Cascavel, in Paraná State, Brazil, consisting of twelve cultivars in a randomized block design with four replications. Seeds were harvested at physiological maturity, in which one sample was submitted to a pre-chilling
