Esta publicação contém 26 capítulos, dos quais 24 abordam aspectos relativos à epidem iologia e controle de várias doenças transmissíveis, sendo que os dois capítulos restantes analisam aspectos de administração e planejamento nas questões de atenção primária em re\ação a estas enfermidades. A s doenças estudadas, tais como: malária, esquistossom ose, sa rampo, tuberculose, hanseníase, dengue, desnutrição, Chagas, são de alta prevalência em países do terceiro mundo, atingindo igualmente o Brasil. A maioria dos artigos foram publicados anteriormente na " Reviews of Infectious D isea ses" . N a apresentação de cada capítulo foi seguido, em geral, a mesma metodologia, salientando três tópicos na abordagem: 1) entendendo o problema; 2) ponto de ataque; 3) métodos de ataque.N o primeiro ponto é descrita a epidem iologia de cada doença com ênfase nos aspectos do agente etiológico, hospedeiro e população sob risco. Em seguida é feito um com entário bastante sucinto, porém objetivo sobre os elos mais fracos na cadeia de transmissão; finalmente, nos " métodos de ataque" são abordadas as formas de intervenção para o controle de cada uma das doenças. U m dos aspectos positivos desta publicação, cujos autores são em sua maioria de países onde essas doenças ou não existem ou estão sob controle, é o de procurar um enfoque bastante objetivo, inter-relacionando a epidem iologia da doença com as ações de controle, de uma forma bastante prática. U m exem plo desta abordagem é o capítulo referente à doença de Chagas, escrito pelo Prof. Philip D avis Marsden, do N ú cleo de M edicina Tropical da U nB, que mostra um conhecim ento da realidade brasileira no tocante a esta endemia, descrevendo de uma forma didática as variáveis epidem iotógicas e as atividades que são executadas no controle desta enfermidade. Por outro lado, o fato de que muitos autores não convivem com as realidades sociais de países com o o nosso, equívo cos ocorrem nas propostas dos métodos de interven ção, o que pode ser constatado no capítulo que trata sobre " Controle de Infecção para Reduzir a D esnu trição" , em que é dada ênfase ao uso de vacinas para corrigir ou reduzir a desnutrição. E ste enfoque, reducionista, nos parece equivocado na medida em que para a desnutrição, cujas causas são sociais e econô micas, é proposta numa abordagem exclusivamente biológica para seu controle.Q uestões com o a referida anteriormente devem ser levadas em consideração na análise e interpretação dos diversos métodos de intervenção que são pro postos. E stes eventuais pontos de controvérsia, não retiram da publicação o valor científico e a seriedade com que são abordados os diversos tópicos, podendo a mesma servir de guia, em n osso m eio, tanto para trabalhadores na área de saúde, que têm responsa bilidade de administrar programas de controle de doenças transmissíveis, com o para professores que se dedicam ao ensino destas doenças.
