A revista Avesso chega ao quarto número com um dossiê sobre o futebol, intitulado: "As configurações do jogo: contextos, agentes e significados".Com efeito, os artigos que compõem o dossiê focalizam configurações muito diversas entre si, como, por exemplo, a da Copa do Catar e a da Penitenciária Feminina de São Paulo. Enquanto a primeira nos remete aos estádios refrigerados, de arquiteturas sofisticadas e dotados de alta tecnologia, nos quais se desenrolam encontros para uma audiência planetária; a segunda nos lança na dura realidade das quadras esburacadas, ou dos campos de terra, espaços precários onde os jogos se realizam no mais completo anonimato.Estas duas configurações tão distantes uma da outra são retratadas nos artigos "A Copa no Catar: o ápice de um projeto de estado para melhorar a imagem do país" e "Futebol para aprisionadas", respectivamente de João Pedro Coelho e Lara Barros Busnello. Os olhares cruzados dos dois artigos revelam-nos a heterogeneidade do futebol (DAMO,2007) os interesses diversos que giram em torno do esporte mais popular do mundo, os inúmeros significados de que ele se reveste. De acordo com a argumentação desenvolvida no artigo de João Pedro Coelho, as autoridades do Catar utilizaram o futebol com o propósito de projetar globalmente uma imagem favorável do país sede da Copa do Mundo, o qual, como se sabe, possui um longo histórico de violação de direitos humanos, sobretudo, da mão de obra imigrante proveniente do continente asiático (Paquistão, Índia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka e Nepal), submetida à condições de trabalho desumanas na construção dos estádios e da infraestrutura do evento da FIFA. Os interesses por trás da Copa do Catar indicam convergem para a adoção de uma estratégia de soft-power, conceito elaborado pelo cientista político Joseph Nye para analisar o modo pelo qual um agente estatal almeja desempenhar um papel relevante na arena global, sem recorrer à força militar (2004). O artigo trata das práticas desenvolvidas pelos passageiros da Central do Brasil que viajavam pendurados nas portas, nas janelas e no teto das composições, focalizadas entre os anos 1950 e 1980. Inicialmente utilizada pela necessidade de enfrentar a superlotação e não perder a hora no emprego, a prática pingente foi adquirindo ao longo do tempo autonomia face ao imperativo que a determinara, revestindo-se de novas motivações. No decorrer dos anos 1960, ela atendia a dupla necessidade de satisfazer o desejo de lazer e de manifestar o sentimento de revolta da juventude despossuída dos subúrbios cariocas. Nesse sentido, o texto destaca, ainda, a prática dos autodenominados surfistas ferroviários, situando-a no quadro contrastivo estabelecido com a arte dos surfistas marítimos, ao mesmo tempo, mimetizada, emulada e hierarquizada pelos jovens que, nos trilhos de trens, desafiam a morte.
O presente artigo discute a relação entre futebol e alteridade através da noção de “equipe exótica”, associada historicamente aos selecionados africanos, muçulmanos, mas também brasileiros. Esta categoria adquire significado mais preciso uma vez situada em relação à técnica do corpo, à tática do jogo e à composição étnico-racial do time. Vista por esse prisma, ela denota tanto extravagância estética quanto desorganização tática; aspectos vinculados a uma identidade cultural considerada “estranha” à norma europeia do futebol científico.
