Palavras chave: ictionêuston; Suape; nordeste do Brasil. ABSTRACTIn order to contribute for the knowledge of the potential fisheries of Suape region (Ipojuca -Pernambuco, Brazil), studies on ichthyoneuston were carried out to assess larvae diversity and distribution pattern and to identify possible nursery areas. The studied area has been subject to impacts due the implantation of an Industrial Port Complex. The samples were collected in 6 areas with a neuston net (500 m mesh size) besides a plankton net horizontally hauled at surface. A total of 284 fish larvae were sampled. The identified larvae belonged to 15 families, being Clupeidae the one that better represented the studied area, with higher density and frequency of occurrence. Typical reef fish families were also found in this area (Carangidae and Lutjanidae). Differences were observed among the six areas and between the nets used, however no significant difference were registered between the inferior and superior neuston, although higher abundance occurred in the inferior neuston net. Samples collected with the plankton net presented higher densities and larger larvae. Larval densities in the areas varied between 50 and 616.67 ind.1000 m -2 . The neustonic layer of Suape region constitutes a typical habitat for fish larvae of ecological and commercial...
