Como resultado de la integración de México a los mercados internacionales en el último cuarto del siglo XIX, numerosas innovaciones tecno-científicas foráneas fueron introducidas en diversos ámbitos de la vida económica y social del país. Simultáneamente, se consolidó el proceso de “universalización” del conocimiento científico, iniciado en Europa en el siglo XVII y afianzado en el XIX con la integración de nuevos espacios geográficos a las redes de intercambio y colaboración. El presente trabajo aborda los principales rasgos de ese proceso en México y examina el desarrollo de la Sociedad Científica “Antonio Alzate” como modelo de una nueva concepción de la sociabilidad científica, tanto en la formulación de sus principios epistémicos, como en el alcance de su vocación internacionalista.
A mediados del siglo XIX se desató una polémica sobre la capacidad intelectual de los habitantes de las altiplanicies. Con base en la metodología fisiológica se estableció que el volumen de oxígeno inhalado disminuye en las grandes altitudes, por lo que el raciocinio disminuía en esas condiciones. En 1899, a través del uso de instrumentos de medición, Daniel Vergara Lope y Alfonso Luis Herrera refutaron los principios de la “fisiología de las alturas” y enviaron su investigación al Instituto Smithsoniano, del que recibieron una distinción. Sin embargo, el trabajo del primero no se detuvo ahí, sino que en los siguientes años sostuvo que incluso el “aire enrarecido” incluso podría aprovecharse para el tratamiento de algunas enfermedades. A través del estudio de los trabajos que Vergara Lope publicó en la Memorias de la Sociedad Científica “Antonio Alzate” este trabajo tiene el objetivo de mostrar el intento del médico mexicano por fundar una nueva terapéutica que reivindicara la fisiología de las alturas a finales del siglo XIX.
La geografía y la historia natural en México. Producción de conocimientos y aplicaciones tecnocientíficas, 1795-1934 contribuye al examen de las prácticas científicas vinculadas con la geografía y la historia natural desarrolladas por científicos, ingenieros y funcionarios mexicanos y extranjeros, que tuvieron implicaciones epistémicas, sociales, económicas y políticas durante las postrimerías del régimen colonial y después de la Independencia. Como resultado de aquéllas, se generaron campos disciplinares y conocimientos sobre el territorio y los recursos naturales, que se expresaron en productos científicos, desarrollos tecnológicos y aplicaciones prácticas. Esta obra presenta nueve capítulos que abordan la conformación de comunidades intelectuales que dotaron a la República Mexicana de un dinamismo científico similar al de otros países europeos y americanos. La geografía y la historia natural fueron disciplinas de especial interés para los grupos en el poder y la sociedad en general, pues se consideraba que la investigación racional del territorio y los recursos naturales garantizarían el progreso material y la consolidación del Estado. De ahí que desde 1821 ambas ciencias descollaron en los proyectos políticos, económicos, educativos, industriales y culturales en los niveles regional y nacional.
