La Universidad Nacional de Loja, ubicada en la frontera sur de Ecuador, investigó sobre la fabricación de bloque con suelo estabilizado en pequeño formato como una alternativa viable para contribuir en la solución de vivienda de interés social. La caracterización físico-mecánica del suelo determinó el uso del cemento para su estabilización; y, el diseño experimental se basó en el modelo multitabla en un hexágono con la manipulación de dos variables: cemento y agua. Los mejores resultados obtuvieron las mezclas con 13 y 9,75 % de cemento y 25 y 22 % de agua respectivamente, con la resistencia a la compresión de 7,78 y 4,66 MPa y el coeficiente de ablandamiento superior a 0,5 que garantizan la resistencia a la humedad. Para confirmar el beneficio social del material desarrollado en laboratorio y su comportamiento en el proceso de colocación en obra, se construyó una vivienda prototipo en la parroquia rural de Chuquiribamba, bajo la modalidad de autoconstrucción para lo cual se cumplió con las fases de: i) Diseño; ii) Producción y iii) Construcción, proceso que permitió un total involucramiento de la familia beneficiaria y de la comunidad.
