A água é um recurso natural indispensável à vida, possui um enorme valor econômico, ambiental e social, fundamental à nossa sobrevivência e dos ecossistemas no nosso planeta. As águas superficiais devem atender a padrões de qualidade e potabilidade, sendo que suas características físicas, químicas e biológicas devem estar dentro dos padrões recomendados pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. O presente estudo objetivou avaliar as condições físico-químicas e biológicas da água de superfície de três corpos hídricos no Município de Teixeira de Freitas, Bahia. Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: DBO (Demanda Bioquímica de Oxigênio), Fósforo total, Nitrogênio total, Oxigênio dissolvido, pH, Sólidos Totais, Turbidez e Coliformes Termotolerantes. A avaliação dos três corpos hídricos estudados indicou contaminação das suas águas por estarem em desacordo com os limites estabelecidos na Resolução CONAMA n° 357/05 para águas doces Classe 2, além do processo de eutrofização das águas do corpo hídrico 1.
