Um dos maiores eventos do Brasil, o São João de Campina Grande incorporou elementos modernos ao seu caráter cultural e regional, adquirindo contornos de espetáculo, num processo de mercadorização da cultura. Tal aspecto remete-nos à discussão de esfera pública proposta por Jürgen Habermas, cuja abordagem aponta para a concepção dualista entre sistema e mundo da vida. Com o intuito de analisar como o mundo da vida e o sistema coexistem no São João de Campina Grande, realizamos a presente pesquisa, de abordagem crítica, por meio de entrevistas em profundidade com quatro grupos de agentes envolvidos na organização do megaevento. Nossos achados apontam para uma clara primazia da ação estratégica, na qual o consenso do espaço público tende a se diluir nos imperativos políticos e mercadológicos implicados na “profissionalização” de um festejo que nasce na esfera pública.
