-The objective of the present study was to evaluate the genetic structure of Gyr cattle selected for milk production. Files of pedigree and production were composed of 27,610 animals. The ENDOG program was used for the calculation of individual inbreeding coefficient (F) and coefficient of average relatedness (AR), effective number of animals(N e ), effective number of founders (f e ) and ancestors (f a ), and generation interval (GI). Individual inbreeding coefficients and average relatedness in the population were 2.82% and 2.10%, respectively. It was observed a reduction in the effective number of animals, especially after publication of the results of the first progeny test. The estimated effective number of founders was 146 and 75 for the ancestrals. Out of those, only 28 ancestors accounted for the origin of 50% of the population genes. The average generation interval was 8.41 years and it was longer for males than for females. For maintaining genetic variability in future generations, it should be invested mating strategies that reduce inbreeding and which do not use massively only some high breeding value sires.Key Words: effective size, generation interval, inbreeding, progeny test Estrutura populacional de bovinos Gir leiteiros no BrasilRESUMO -O objetivo neste trabalho foi avaliar a estrutura genética da raça Gir selecionada para produção de leite.
Palavras-chave: componentes de variância, dia do controle, modelo animal, polinômios de Legendre, produção de leite Comparison of random regression models for the estimation of genetic parameters in dairy goatsABSTRACT -Random regression and Legendre polynomial (LP) of different orders were used for modeling the genetic, permanent environmental and residual variances of test day milk yield in dairy goats. The models included the fixed effects of contemporary group, age of dam at kidding as a covariate and the fixed regression of LP for the average lactation curve and the additive genetic, permanent environmental and residual as random effects. According to the values of the logarithm of the likelihood function, AIC and BIC using higher orders of LP (fifth order for the genetic effect and seventh order for the permanent environmental effect) improved the fitting of the models. The model with four classes of residual variances provided the best fit. The eigenvalues of the (co)variances matrix among the regression coefficients suggested the possibility of reducing the dimension of the models. The estimates of genetic variances and genetic and permanent environmental correlations for test day milk yields obtained from polynomials of higher orders are not biologically expected. The LP of fifth order for the addictive genetic and seventh order for the permanent environmental effects was the best fitted model. However, a LP of fourth order for the addictive genetic and of sixth or...
Despite the high rank correlation, changes in ranking of bucks for milk yield up to 305 days were observed when selection was based on PLDC at 90 days. Selection based on PLDC and PAC in middle lactation may be used as a selection criterion in substitution for milk yield up to 305 days.
