BackgroundCo-crystal of tramadol–celecoxib (CTC), containing equimolar quantities of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) tramadol and celecoxib (100 mg CTC = 44 mg rac–tramadol hydrochloride and 56 mg celecoxib), is a novel API-API co-crystal for the treatment of pain. We aimed to establish the effective dose of CTC for treating acute pain following oral surgery.MethodsA dose-finding, double-blind, randomised, placebo- and active-controlled, multicentre (nine Spanish hospitals), phase II study (EudraCT number: 2011-002778-21) was performed in male and female patients aged ≥ 18 years experiencing moderate to severe pain following extraction of two or more impacted third molars requiring bone removal. Eligible patients were randomised via a computer-generated list to receive one of six single-dose treatments (CTC 50, 100, 150, 200 mg; tramadol 100 mg; and placebo). The primary efficacy endpoint was the sum of pain intensity difference (SPID) over 8 h assessed in the per-protocol population.ResultsBetween 10 February 2012 and 13 February 2013, 334 patients were randomised and received study treatment: 50 mg (n = 55), 100 mg (n = 53), 150 mg (n = 57), or 200 mg (n = 57) of CTC, 100 mg tramadol (n = 58), or placebo (n = 54). CTC 100, 150, and 200 mg showed significantly higher efficacy compared with placebo and/or tramadol in all measures: SPID (0–8 h) (mean [standard deviation]): − 90 (234), − 139 (227), − 173 (224), 71 (213), and 22 (228), respectively. The proportion of patients experiencing treatment-emergent adverse events was lower in the 50 (12.7% [n = 7]), 100 (11.3% [n = 6]), and 150 (15.8% [n = 9]) mg CTC groups, and similar in the 200 mg (29.8% [n = 17]) CTC group, compared with the tramadol group (29.3% [n = 17]), with nausea, dizziness, and vomiting the most frequent events.ConclusionSignificant improvement in the benefit–risk ratio was observed for CTC (doses ≥ 100 mg) over tramadol and placebo in the treatment of acute pain following oral surgery.FundingLaboratorios del Dr. Esteve, S.A.U.

Thermal analysis of the monoclinic solid state laser host KLu(WO4)2 is presented. The specific heat was measured by the relaxation method in the temperature range from 1.9 to 385 K: its value at room temperature is 0.324 J/gK. The Debye temperature and the sound velocity amount to 303+/-3 K and 3734 m/s. The linear thermal expansion tensor was measured by X-ray powder diffraction from room temperature up to 773 K. The eigenvalues of this tensor are alpha'(11)=8.98 x 10(-6) K(-1), alpha'(22)=3.35 x 10(-6) K(-1), and alpha'(33)=16.72 x 10(-6) K(-1), with the maximum value in the a-b crystallographic plane, at 31.94 degrees from the N(g) principal optical axis. The thermal diffusivity and its anisotropy in the temperature range between 300 and 500 K were measured by the pyroelectric method to determine the thermal conductivity tensor. The eigenvalues of the thermal conductivity are kappa'(11)=2.95 Wm(-1)K(-1), kappa'(22)=2.36 Wm-1K-1, and kappa'(33)=4.06 Wm(-1)K(-1), with the maximum value along a direction again in the a-b crystallographic plane, at 40.75 degrees from the N(g) principal optical axis. Simulation of the temperature distribution in a bulk sample of KLu(WO4)2 with dimensions 3 x 3 x 3 mm(3) shows that pump and laser beam directions along the N(p) principal optical axis in terms of thermal effects are preferable because the propagation is along a quasi-isothermal path.

Abstract. The use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to investigate the ocean surface provides a wealth of useful information that is very seldom used to its full potential. Here we will discuss the application of multifractal techniques to detect oil spills and the dynamic state of the sea regarding turbulent diffusion. We present different techniques in order to relate the shape of the multifractal spectral functions and the maximum fractal dimension to the behaviour of the ocean surface. We compare eddy and sheared dominated flows with convective driven flows and discuss the different features and observation methods. We also compare the scaling of different oil spills detected by means of SAR images. Recent spills and weathered ones are selected and compared to investigate their behaviour in different spatial and temporal ranges. We calculate the partition function based on the grey intensity value of each SAR pixel deriving several types of multifractal spectra as a function of spill residence time estimated for each image. Image manipulations are seen to reduce the speckle noise and thus distinguish much better the texture of the oil spill images. The results are used to discuss how eddy diffusivity may be estimated and used in a description of the ocean surface using a simple turbulence kinematic simulation model to predict the shape of oil spills. Differences in the multifractal spectrum among SAR images may detect the slicks due to plankton and also provide information on the age of the oil spills, on the Lagrangian turbulent structure and on ocean surface diffusivity.

A two-dimensional axisymmetric model is developed to study the hydrogen absorption reaction and resultant mass and heat transport phenomena inside a metal hydride canister. The model is compared against published literature and experimental data. Experimental tests are performed on an in-house fabricated setup using different cooling scenarios. An extensive study on the effects of the metal properties on charging performance is carried out through nondestructive testing (NDT). Results show that the properties that most influence the charging performance are: absorption rate constant (Ca), activation energy (Ea) and thermal conductivity (k m ). A Higher porosity (ε) reduces charging time and amount of hydrogen stored while a higher cooling level produces a faster charging process. These results can be used to select metal hydride materials but also to estimate the metal hydride internal state and the process can be used for future evaluation of metal hydride degradation.
