Daß einer der zentralsten Texte, mit denen sich die Byzantinistik zu beschäftigen hat, das unter dem Namen des Kaisers Konstantinos VII. Porphyrogennetos laufende "Zeremonienbuch" 1 , nicht nur von einem codex unicus, dem Cod. Lips. Univ. Rep. I 17 (gr. 28) (im folgenden: L), repräsentiert wird, sondern daß es daneben auch einen Überlieferungszweig in Palimpsesten gibt, ist der Wissenschaft seit geraumer Zeit bekannt: 1960 veröffentlichten Cyril Mango und Ihor Ševcenko eine erste Studie zu den von ihnen im Cod. Chalc. S. Trinitatis 133 (125) aufgefundenen Palimpsestfragmenten (im folgenden: C) 2 , und in den siebziger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts entdeckten bzw. identifizierten Wolfgang Waldstein und Otto Kresten weitere palimpsestierte Bruchstücke im Cod. Athous Vatop. 1003 (im folgenden: V) und stellten fest, daß die palimpsestierten Folien des Vatopedinus aus dem nämlichen "Muttercodex" stammen, der auch bei der Anfertigung des Chalcensis palimpsestiert und ausgebeutet wurde 3 . 1 Der Titel De cerimoniis, unter dem dieser Text heute in der Regel zitiert wird, ist eine durch die Überlieferung nicht gedeckte, von der früheren Forschung faute de mieux künstlich geschaffene Bezeichnung: Einen abschließenden, vom "Autor" selbst festgelegten Titel hat das (im Grunde unvollendet gebliebene) Werk nie erhalten (das gilt mutatis mutandis auch für zwei weitere unter dem Namen Konstantinos' VII. tradierte Schriften, für De administrando imperio und De thematibus), denn die auf f. 21v des Lipsiensis vorhandene "Überschrift" (KvnstantÝnoy to® ®iloxrÝstoy kaä ‰n a ‡tš {tš} [dieser in den bisherigen Editionen zu lesende, auf Dittographie zurückzuführende Artikel ist in L nicht bezeugt!] Xristš tš aOEvnÝv basile' basilÛvw, yÓo® LÛontow to® so®vtÀtoy kaä ˆeimnÜstoy basilÛvw, syntÀgmati [sic; lies sàntagmÀ ti] kaä basileÝoy spoyd&w ¹ntvw ™jion poÝhma) kann kaum als "Gesamttitel" gelten, sondern macht eher (auch im Vergleich zu De administrando imperio, wo das KvnstantÝnoy ‰n Xristš basile' aOEvnÝv basilÛvw ^RvmaÝvn pråw tån oedion yÓån ^Rvmanån tån ueoste®& kaä por®yrogÛnnhton basilÛa [Constantine Porphyrogenitus De administrando imperio.
