O trabalho sempre ocupou lugar de destaque na vida do ser humano, seja como fonte de subsistência, meio de (re)inserção social ou direito social fundamental. Ao longo dos anos tem sofrido contínuas e significativas transformações em seu formato, organização e exigências, o que demanda novas competências dos trabalhadores e trabalhadoras. Essa cadeia de mudanças ocorridas nas condições de trabalho acaba por impactar a vida e a saúde dos trabalhadores que, por vezes, vivenciam no labor a satisfação e o prazer e, em outras, experienciam o sofrimento e o mal-estar. Nota-se, por conseguinte, que nas últimas décadas do século XX houve modificações no perfil de morbidade dos agravos à saúde relacionados ao trabalho. Nessa perspectiva, se insere a Saúde do Trabalhador como a área da Saúde Pública que se ocupa da compreessão dessa relação entre trabalho e adoecimento, bem como estuda meios para o estabelecimento de um ambiente mais saudável e seguro para todos aqueles inseridos no mercado de trabalho, seja formal ou informal, incluindo o domiciliar e familiar. Destaca-se ainda que, dentre os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável estabelecidos pela Organização das Nações Unidas almeja-se alcançar o pleno emprego e o trabalho decente para todas as mulheres e homens até 2030. A propósito disso, a Organização Pan-Americana da Saúde recomenda dentre as prioridades para pesquisas na América Latina, a subcategoria Saúde Ocupacional, como algo que carece de investigação, a citar a análise da prevalência e incidência das doenças e acidentes ocupacionais, dentre outros problemas relacionados. Desejamos aos leitores e leitoras uma proveitosa leitura e esperamos que esse e-book incite o interesse por novas pesquisas e intervenções no campo da saúde e segurança do trabalho.
