We conducted studies with mice, rats, and monkeys which demonstrated the ability of glucan to induce either nonspecific or specific enhancement of host resistance to infectious diseases. Intravenous pretreatment of mice with glucan significantly enhanced the survival of mice challenged with either Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus or Rift Valley fever virus. Pretreatment was beneficial when initiated 3 days before challenge with VEE virus and 7 days before challenge with Rift Valley fever virus. Treatment of mice after VEE challenge did not increase their survival compared with controls. Glucan pretreatment of rats provided increased resistance to both intraperitoneal and low-dose aerosol challenges with virulent Francisella tularensis when the glucan was given intravenously, but not when it was administered intranasally. In contrast, intranasal glucan pretreatment enhanced the survival of mice when they were challenged by aerosol with Pseudomonas pseudomallei, whereas intravenous glucan pretreatment did not increase survival. mice given glucan combined with a marginally immunogenic dose of VEE vaccine were more resistant to homologous virus challenge than were mice given either Freund complete adjuvant plus vaccine or vaccine alone. Similarly, both primary and secondary VEE antibody titers in cynomolgus monkeys given glucan with VEE vaccine were significantly greater than titers in vaccine controls.
Emissions of fine particulate matter, PM 2.5 , in both primary and secondary form, are difficult to capture in typical dry electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). Wet (or waterbased) ESPs are well suited for collection of acid aerosols and fine particulates because of greater corona power and virtually no re-entrainment. However, field disruptions because of spraying (misting) of water, formation of dry spots (channeling), and collector surface corrosion limit the applicability of current wet ESPs in the control of secondary PM 2.5 . Researchers at Ohio University have patented novel membrane collection surfaces to address these problems. Water-based cleaning in membrane collectors made of corrosion-resistant fibers is facilitated by capillary action between the fibers, maintaining an even distribution of water. This paper presents collection efficiency results of lab-scale and pilot-scale testing at FirstEnergy's Bruce Mansfield Plant for the membranebased wet ESP. The data indicate that a membrane wet ESP was more effective at collecting fine particulates, acid aerosols, and oxidized mercury than the metal-plate wet ESP, even with ϳ15% less collecting area.
We have performed cytogenetic studies on five renal oncocytic neoplasms (three grade 2 tumors and two grade 1 tumors) identified histologically by light microscopy. One grade 1 tumor failed to produce mitotic cells. The other four tumors exhibited both normal and abnormal cell lines. Numerical abnormalities were found in both the single grade 1 and two of the grade 2 tumors whereas structural abnormalities were limited to grade 2 tumors. Aneuploidy of chromosome 12 was observed in both grade 1 and 2 tumors. Grade 2 tumors showed more extensive numerical change than the grade 1 tumors. Abnormalities of chromosome 3 characteristic of renal cell carcinoma were not found in any tumor in this series. A combination of C-banding and HaeIII endonuclease banding was used to identify an ambiguous marker. In our four cases and in the cases previously reported, loss of a sex chromosome, abnormalities of chromosomes 1 and 22, and trisomy 12 are findings most often observed in renal oncocytoma.
