La réussite est un temps difficile. Jamais, sans doute, les Annales n'ont été autant citées, utilisées, imitées. On leur consacre des colloques, des études. Un peu partout, à l'étranger, et en dernier lieu dans le monde anglo-saxon (pourtant longtemps réticent), on en revendique l'héritage. Il y a même quelque chose d'inquiétant dans cette crue nouvelle d'intérêt : de tous côtés on analyse, on dissèque un mouvement qui se voudrait encore vivant. Vivant ? Est-ce, si sûr ? Dans le temps même où la revue et ceux qui s'en réclament devenaient objet d'études historiographiques, la critique s'est faite plus sévère. Elle vise parfois le succès même de l'entreprise à laquelle elle reproche de n'être plus, précisément, qu'une entreprise.

Em outubro de 2007, Jacques Revel esteve no Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Sociais, a convite do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social da UFRJ (PPGHIS), do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da UERJ. O historiador francês concedeu, nesse mesmo momento, uma entrevista a professores do PPGHIS, em torno das questões que marcam o seu trabalho em história social das práticas culturais e a sua proximidade da micro-história italiana, de que foi o introdutor na França e é, até os dias de hoje, um interlocutor dos mais privilegiados.Andréa Daher: Eu me permito iniciar estabelecendo um vínculo com a primeira entrevista que fizemos há seis anos atrás para Topoi. Na ocasião, lhe fizemos uma primeira pergunta que dizia respeito à configuração do campo historiográfico de uma maneira geral. Hoje pergunto: o que teria mudado na configuração do campo historiográfico, nesses últimos anos?Jacques Revel: Não acredito que tenha havido uma transformação muito profunda. Seis anos é bastante tempo, mas na História -simultaneamente dos pontos de vista institucional, social e intelectual -seis anos significam bem pouco. Não tenho o sentimento de que, na França, tenha ocorrido qualquer transformação significativa, ainda mais que o sistema francês é um sistema que -por razões institucionais e políticas que eu nem consideraria rígidas -não se presta a mudanças tão rápidas. Nos Estados Unidos, quando uma disciplina ou mesmo uma nova composição disciplinar aparece, ela é imediatamente difundida, ganha repercussão e, como existe um número expressivo de universidades e de instrumentos bem consistentes de socialização profissional, em um ou dois anos uma parte da paisagem pode mudar. E isso também é verdade negativamente: nos anos 90, nos Estados Unidos, praticamente se deixou de fazer e de ensinar as histórias nacionais europeias com exceção talvez dos french studies. Bem, isso acarretou consequências quanto à organização da pesquisa, dos programas existentes. Mas isso se passou bem rápido, porque os estudantes preferiam aprender japonês, se interessar pela China ou pela área do Pacífico -que é considerada como a "zona do futuro", mais do que a "velha Europa". Uma das vantagens e, ao mesmo tempo, um dos defeitos do sistema francês é que ele não é reativo no curto prazo a essas incitações conjunturais. Portanto, é possível dizer que, na França, não foram reduzidos os cargos em pesquisa (talvez tenham até aumentado). Além disso, não houve até agora menos dinheiro para se fazer pesquisa, e não suprimimos nem tampouco adicionamos grande coisa. Os recursos e as obrigações permaneceram mais ou menos os mesmos. Isso não quer dizer que nada mudou: claro que existem sempre temáticas que aparecem; porém elas aparecem lentamente porque, como já disse, a acumulação é mais lenta. Um exemplo é o que chamamos por um termo bem vago, global history, a história global que, já há 50 anos, desde o tempo de Braudel, esteve em voga na França e que quase desapareceu nos últimos 20 ou 25 anos e agora retornou. Os cientistas sociais opõem atualmente a micro e a macro análise em termos de tópicos, desafios e estratégias da pesquisa. Nas décadas passadas, historiadores também debateram e compararam as vantagens da micro-história com versões diferentes da história do macro, a transnacional ou a global. Este ensaio sugere como alternativa colocar a atenção sobre a importância do princípio de variação das escalas da observação, em termos heurísticos e críticos. Esboça um modelo analítico que convida a pensar que é em todos os níveis, desde o mais local até o mais global, que os processos sócio-históricos são gravados. Só podem ser compreendidos, portanto, como resultantes de uma multiplicidade de determinações, projetos, obrigações, estratégias e táticas individuais e coletivas.
