Volunteers are considered an essential resource for not-for-profit organizations. It’s common ground between the authors that they are one of the main characteristics of the third sector organizations (Keyton, Wilson and Geiger, 1990; Wymer, 2003; Brudney, 2005; McCurley, 2005). At the same time, the resort to a non-paid personnel is viewed as a heavy trend of the Canadian national economy (Statistique Canada, 2012). This article introduces an original typology of volunteers in non-profit-making organizations based on empirical data. This leads to a differentiated volunteer management model which takes into account the expectations and the specific motivations of each category.
