A method of assessing the scatter of gamma radiation from air volumes and structural materials above open topped gamma cells is presented. The calculations involve the summation of the scatter from thin strips of air or other materials and assume that air absorption and multiple scattering are effectively self cancelling. Comparison with experimental data is given which shows that the method gives sufficient accuracy for protection purposes.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
