A abstração é uma das principais barreiras no ensino e aprendizagem de Química. E para transpô-la, docentes valem-se dos mais diversos métodos de mediação (imagens de livros didáticos, desenho no quadro-negro, conjuntos de modelo molecular, entre outros) no intuito de tornar o mundo atômico menos complexo e melhorar a compreensão conceitual dos estudantes. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a maximização das habilidades de conceituação, reconhecimento e construção de modelos através das funcionalidades de visualização tridimensional, análise e construção/manipulação de estruturas moleculares através do Avogadro (software). Assim, apresentam-se aqui experiências didáticas da aplicação da Química Computacional para o ensino e aprendizagem de geometria e polaridade molecular a estudantes de três turmas da 1ª série do Técnico Integrado ao Ensino Médio do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Pará (IFPA), cujos resultados, medidos através de testes e participação discente, demonstram incrementos em todas as habilidades avaliadas – em especial, no reconhecimento de polaridade molecular de 23,5% (antes da aplicação) para 70,6% (pós-aplicação). Deste modo, percebe-se a viabilidade positiva do uso do Avogadro (software) em sequências didáticas dos referidos tópicos no ensino de química.
