INTRODUÇÃO: a doença de Parkinson é classificada como neurodegenerativa progressiva e uma de suas principais características é a presença de tremores, porém não é a única. Nessa enfermidade também se destacam sinais e sintomas como hipotensão postural, insônia, prejuízos cognitivos e demência. Nesse sentido, o tratamento é realizado, na maioria das vezes, por meio de medicamentos, somado ao acompanhamento com uma equipe multidisciplinar, realizado por psicólogos e nutricionistas, que juntos buscam reduzir e retardar o agravamento da doença. Contudo, com o avanço da modernidade atrelada à neurocirurgia, surgiu uma possibilidade de tratamento que utiliza a física para tentar melhorar o comportamento motor do paciente afetado, método que é chamado de Estimulação Cerebral Profunda, e que consiste na implantação de eletrodos em regiões específicas do cérebro a fim de se ter um estímulo profundo do órgão. MÉTODO: sabendo disso, realizou-se uma pesquisa sistemática em oito artigos na língua portuguesa e inglesa, cujo conteúdo fosse coerente com o tema e com informações verdadeiras para entender como esse tratamento funciona e sua eficácia para pacientes com a doença de Parkinson. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃO: após o estudo, notou-se que o uso dessa terapia alternativa cirúrgica pode ser um fator de melhora para alguns pacientes e de piora para outros. Como benefício, cita-se a diminuição do uso de fármacos, redução da ansiedade, bem como a amenização dos tremores com consequente melhoria na qualidade de vida do doente. Já como malefício, houve prejuízos na comunicação verbal, a qual se tornou mais lenta e redução na velocidade de processamento de informações. CONCLUSÃO: dessa forma, fica nítido que esse tratamento ainda necessita de mais estudos para entender quando esse deve ser aplicado. Porém, ressalta-se que ele pode se tornar uma grande estratégia do prolongamento da qualidade de vida em diversos casos, considerando o risco que uma neurocirurgia possui somado ao benefício que ela pode proporcionar.
