TOEFL is a standardized test which measures the students’ skill and ability in English. This test is one of the requirements for English Department students before they take the theses examination. Hence, the students must be prepared well before taking the test in order they can get the standard score of TOEFL as has been required by English study program. During the pre-observation, it has been found that many students of English study program still have difficulty in having the TOEFL test that it finally gives impact on their TOEFL scores. For this reason, this research is conducted as an effort to analyze and get information about the students’ ability in TOEFL test, especially in the reading test. This research is analyzed qualitatively by taking the English Department students as the participants. The data are collected by using two instruments; observation and documentation, and it analyzes through some steps such as identifying the result of students’ test and analyzing them to obtain the answer of the research question. This research analyzes the students’ ability in reading toefl refers to Philips’ theory in toefl reading skill. The result of this research shows that the students have a high percentage in find pronoun referents. While find definition from structural clues is the lowest one. Thus, the students and lecturers should pay more attention to the strategies in reading toefl and have more practice in doing the test.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kebutuhan belajar bahasa Inggris pada mahasiswa di lima program studi yang ada di Fakultas Teknik Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, yaitu Prodi Elektro, Arsitektur, Sipil, Industri, dan Informatika. Pengumpulan data dilaksanakan melalui pemberian angket kepada mahasiswa Fakultas Teknik sebagai responden penelitian untuk mengidentifikasi apa saja kebutuhan dan harapan mahasiswa ketika belajar Bahasa Inggris di prodi mereka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa di fakultas teknik memiliki kebutuhan belajar Bahasa Inggris yang dititikberatkan pada peningkatan empat keterampilan bahasa, yaitu berbicara, menulis, mendengar, dan membaca. Hasil persentase dalam angket menunjukkan sebanyak 95% mahasiwa setuju bahwa keterampilan mendengar, berbicara, dan membaca sangat dibutuhkan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, sedangkan keterampilan menulis memperoleh persentase sebanyak 90%. Selain itu, mahasiswa juga memiliki harapan untuk dapat lebih banyak belajar kosakata bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan program studi mereka, karena kosakata tersebut sangat membantu mereka dalam proses pembelajaran pada mata kuliah yang ada di prodi mereka. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan bagi dosen pengajar dalam menyusun silabus dan bahan ajar mata kuliah bahasa Inggris di prodi yang ada di Fakultas Teknik UNG.
This study aims to explore the students’ perception of the use of English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) in teaching and learning at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gorontalo. This explorative qualitative study employed a purposive sampling method. This study involved 112 twelve-grade students from IPA, IPS, and BAHASA majors of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gorontalo as the subjects. This study utilized questionnaires for data collection, while the Likert Scale and Percentage Formula were performed in data analysis. The result showed that the students had positive perceptions of the three EMI types of perception: visual, auditory, and speech perception. The average results in visual, auditory, and speech perceptions were 70.96% (‘strongly agree’ category), 70.49% (‘strongly agree’ category), and 57.90% (‘agree’ category). Further study with bigger samples and different subjects is recommended since this research only focuses on students perception of the Use of EMI in Teaching and Learning at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gorontalo.
This is a qualitative descriptive research which aims to know what learning models are being implemented in English learning process at SMP Negeri 4 Gorontalo based on 2013 curriculum. The data collection technique employs interview, in which the participant is the four English teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Gorontalo. The data analysis technique uses the interactive analysis steps from Miles & Huberman, they are data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The finding shows that there are three learning models implemented in the English learning process, including project-based learning, scientific approach with ICT-based media, and conventional learning model. All those learning model implemented have their own syntaxes and specified objective. Thus, based on the finding, it can be concluded that learning model that is actually implemented more often by the English teachers to strengthen the scientific process based on the Permendikbud Number 22 of 2016 is project-based learning. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui model pembelajaran apa saja yang diterapkan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 4 Gorontalo berdasarkan kurikulum 2013. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, dimana partisipan adalah empat guru bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 4 Gorontalo. Teknik analisis data menggunakan langkah-langkah analisis interaktif dari Miles & Huberman yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga model pembelajaran yang diterapkan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, yaitu project-based learning, pendekatan saintifik dengan media berbasis TIK, dan model pembelajaran konvensional. Semua model pembelajaran yang diterapkan memiliki sintaks dan tujuan masing-masing. Dengan demikian, berdasarkan temuan dapat disimpulkan bahwa model pembelajaran yang sering diterapkan oleh guru bahasa Inggris untuk memperkuat proses saintifik berdasarkan Permendikbud Nomor 22 Tahun 2016 adalah project-based learning.
