Emotions play an important role in the field of leadership. The intelligent use of emotions may be beneficial for leaders in achieving success. In fact, good use of emotions has been seen as a prerequisite for effective leadership. Leaders with high emotional competencies are perceived as more efficient by their followers. Besides, the use of emotional intelligence (EI) was found to be linked with transformational leadership. Furthermore, leaders' EI was found to be affecting followers' and organizational outcomes. Thus, we provide a selective review on the relationship between emotions and leadership. Our findings showed that EI is essential for successful leadership as it provides many benefits to leaders. With the use of EI, leaders could manage the team intelligently, handle difficult situations properly and reduce their stress effectively. Hence, we identified that it is necessary for researchers to further study the links between EI and leadership to gain the most benefits from it. We conclude with a discussion on the theoretical and practical implication, as well as some recommendation for future research with the promising use of EI in leadership development.
Early flood warnings are important to allow sufficient time for evacuation.Although warning systems are now in place, key questions remain as to their effectiveness in sending information to the public, which may in part depend on the media used. This paper assesses the effectiveness of warnings disseminated to the public for the December 2014 Kelantan Flood, Malaysia. The flood was the worst in decades making it an appropriate case study with which to assess public awareness and perceptions associated with flood warnings and their dissemination. The effectiveness of warnings issued via different media was assessed by questionnaire. Results show that 56% of respondents received warnings prior to the flood, a majority of them through television and information shared among the public. While the preferred medium of warning is not dependent on age, assessment of peoples' response to warnings shows that with increasing age responsiveness to orders and readiness to evacuate decreases. To increase the number of people receiving the warnings, short message service (SMS) communications sent from the authorities to a wider audience may be considered, as information shared among the public is observed to be most effective in reaching the greatest number of people. There are limited literatures that discussed on the trend of OCB. Hence, this bibliometric analysis is aimed to evaluate the global research growth to retrieve and analyse the publication on OCB. The bibliometric analysis is used to search the database of Scopus from the oldest publication in 1988 to the recent publication in 2019. The objectives were to evaluate the output of publications, co-authorship, leading countries and institutions, top authors, and co-occurrences of author keywords. This study used VOS Viewer 1.6.11 to analyse and visualise the global research trend on OCB in analysing the bibliographic data. Bibliometric maps were retrieved from VOS Viewer 1.6.11. This study retrieved 2, 356 journal articles from Scopus database from 1988 to 2019. The publication’s trend revealed that the number of publications has been increasing steadily since 2002. The leading countries in OCB research are the United States and China. Among the fifteen leading universities, five of them were from the world’s top 150 universities. Among the keywords, ‘commitment’ has the most link with OCB, which indicated that OCB is active in the management field compared to other fields such as nursing and psychology. This paper can be beneficial for academicians, organisations, and business policymakers in understanding the global trend of OCB besides discovering the future directions and opportunities for future studies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
