En las últimas décadas del siglo XVII un pequeño grupo de mercaderes de la ciudad de México garantizaron la producción de la mayor parte de la plata que se producía en Nueva España. En el artículo se exponen las redes que articularon dichos mercaderes para adquirir la plata, el papel de los vínculos familiares y la importancia de las relaciones de confianza en el financiamiento de sus negocios. Se analiza la forma en que el crédito de los tratantes de plata garantizó el abasto de azogue, en particular cuando tomaron el control del Consulado de México y éste se hizo cargo de administrar la renta de alcabalas. Por último, se examina cómo la venalidad de los oficios reales permitió a dichos actores dominar la única Casa de Moneda de Nueva España, así como las prácticas ilícitas que llevaban a cabo en relación con la acuñación.
Este artículo expone la resistencia del Consulado de mercaderes de la ciudad de México a la liberación comercial de Nueva España, sus esfuerzos para ganar el respaldo del segundo conde de Revillagigedo, contribuyendo a las reformas urbanas que éste promovió, y el antagonismo que surgió entre ambos cuando el virrey promovió activamente el librecambio. En particular, analiza la forma en que la corporación mercantil se valió de su función como intermediario financiero del erario con el fin de obtener ciertos privilegios que permitieran a sus miembros compensar las pérdidas ocasionadas por la supresión del sistema de flotas.
RESUMENEl estado de guerra permanente durante el reinado de Felipe II y parte del de Felipe III dio lugar a una demanda fiscal creciente en Castilla e Indias. El tesoro americano, que aseguraba a la Monarquía Católica el acceso al crédito con que sostener sus campañas, aumentó mucho a lo largo del siglo XVI. No obstante, los mercaderes de la ciudad de México, que aseguraban la producción de metales preciosos y su envío a la metrópoli, establecieron un tráfico altamente rentable con Perú y Filipinas, el cual presentaba el gran inconveniente de generar un flujo continuo de plata hacia el Lejano Oriente. Ante las quejas del Consulado de Sevilla por la competencia de los géneros chinos y la pérdida de plata americana, el Monarca impuso restricciones al comercio triangular del Pacífico, las cuales lo enfrentaron con las autoridades de los virreinatos indianos interesados en dicho tráfico, con el resultado de una generalización del contrabando.
