Diversas ocorrências de xenólitos metamórficos em granitoides neoproterozoicos são reconhecidas no Domínio Oriental do Cinturão Dom Feliciano (Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil). No entanto, carecem de estudos detalhados que permitam investigar a história pretérita e a natureza da crosta desse domínio. O presente artigo apresenta uma investigação realizada em xenólitos metamórficos da região de Piratini e Pinheiro Machado, sudeste do Escudo Sul-rio-grandense, envolvendo trabalhos de campo, microscopia óptica, geoquímica de rocha total e geocronologia (U-Pb SHRIMP em zircão). A associação de rochas gnáissicas estudada, denominada Gnaisses Piratini, apresenta composição intermediária a ácida, predominantemente granodiorítica a tonalítica, cálcio-alcalina médio a alto-K, predominantemente peraluminosa, com assinaturas geoquímicas compatíveis com magmatismo relacionado à subducção. As idades U-Pb SHRIMP obtidas em zircão foram de 784 ± 4 Ma para o magmatismo e de 664 para o metamorfismo. Esses novos dados permitiram interpretar os protólitos dos Gnaisses Piratini como provenientes de um ambiente de arco magmático continental, relacionado à subducção em torno de 800 Ma, seguido de metamorfismo em ca. 660 Ma.
