ABSTRACTIn this study, we investigate templates, i.e. systematic word patterns which carry prosodic and/ or segmental information (VIHMAN; CROFT, 2007), in the typical phonological development of a child acquiring Brazilian Portuguese (BP) from Vitória da Conquista-BA, aged between 1;5 -2;5 years old. We assume the Complex Adaptive Systems theory (THELEN; SMITH, 1994) as theoretical background and the Templatic phonology (VELLEMAN; VIHMAN, 2002;VIHMAN;CROFT, 2007) as phonological approach. In the analysis, we hypothesise that templates are used by children as a strategy for lexicon expansion which can be observed regardless of analysing types instead of tokens and vice versa. However, in the analysis of tokens we found no evidence of template manifestation. On the other hand, two templates were observed in the analysis of types as V and CV were distributed in five sessions from 1;5 to 1;9. Thus, our hypothesis was not entirely confirmed as the type of data is relevant in the investigation about templates in phonological development.
