INTRODUÇÃO: a relação entre epilepsia e sono é conhecida há muitos anos. Distúrbios do sono e epilepsia são condições patológicas de elevada prevalência na população geral, particularmente na infância e adolescência. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a qualidade do sono em crianças com idades entre sete e 15 anos portadoras de epilepsia controlada e refratária. MÉTODOS: o questionário "Sleep Behavior Questionnaire", traduzido e validado para a língua portuguesa, foi aplicado aos pacientes com epilepsia controlada e com epilepsia refratária atendidos no Serviço de Neurologia Infantil do Hospital Pequeno Príncipe entre abril e setembro de 2007. RESULTADOS: foram incluídos 46 pacientes, sendo 24 com epilepsia controlada (Grupo 1) e 22 com epilepsia refratária (Grupo 2). Foi aplicado o teste estatístico de Mann-Whitney para amostras independentes e constatado diferença significativa (p = 0,000) ente os índices de qualidade de sono entre os dois grupos, sendo a qualidade de sono considerada pior nos pacientes com epilepsia refratária. Alterações no EEG não evidenciaram relação significativa com a qualidade de sono. CONCLUSÃO: nossos dados demonstram que crianças entre 7 e 15 anos portadoras de epilepsia refratária têm pior qualidade de sono que as crianças com epilepsia controlada.
