A sarcopenia é caracterizada pela perda progressiva e generalizada de massa muscular esquelética e força, que provoca desfechos adversos de saúde, tais como a incapacidade física e a mortalidade. Alterações metabólicas, incluindo inflamação sistêmica aumentada e estresse oxidativo, fatores relacionados ao tumor e/ou terapias contra o câncer, combinados com ingestão nutricional reduzida e inatividade física são os principais fatores de perda de massa muscular, força e função em pessoas com câncer. Diante disso, faz-se necessário dar atenção aos métodos de investigação e diagnóstico, assim como, as estratégias de intervenção com o intuito de mitigar a sarcopenia nos pacientes com câncer e minimizar os efeitos adversos. Em relação à avaliação, verifica-se a utilização de instrumentos como o SARC-F (Strenght, assistance with walking, rising from a chair, climb stairs and falls) para restreio, absorciometria radiológica de dupla energia, tomografia computadorizada e bioimpedância elétrica. Já em relação às intervenções destaca-se o exercício físico e a suplementação nutricional, sendo importantes para redução das incapacidades e melhora da qualidade de vida dos pacientes.
