Heuer jährt sich der Geburtstag des Hofkapellmeisters dreier preußischer Könige, des politisch und literarisch engagierten J. F. Reichardt zum 250. Mal -willkommener Anlass, sich eines Mannes zu besinnen, der zu den tonangebenden Autoren seiner Zeit gehörte und von seinen Zeitgenossen als "flinker Weltmann", rastlos tätiger, von Reiselust und Erlebnisdrang getriebener, hellwacher Zeitzeuge geschildert wird. Schon vor einigen Jahren schien sich eine Renaissance seiner Werke abzuzeichnen; fast überrascht hieß es 1999 in der FAZ über die Wiederaufführung seiner Vertonung eines Goethe'schen Librettos Erwin und Elmire, dass es sich um "eine Komposition mit höchst differenziert ausgeführten Rezitativen, weithin sorgfältiger Instrumentation und gelegentlich großen Opern-Gesten" handle. Dass das Erscheinen der CD-Produktion jedoch erst zu Beginn des kommenden Jahres zu erwarten ist, zeigt die Zögerlichkeit, mit der man dem dramatischen Werk Reichardts heute begegnet, die so gar nicht zum Rang und Selbstbewusstsein passen will, die er als kritischer Reformator der damaligen Opernlandschaft hatte. Auf dem Zenit seiner Laufbahn rief er im 1792 erschienenen 2. Teil von Ernst Ludwig Gerbers Historisch-Biographischem Lexikon der Tonkünstler sogar aus: "Welche lachende Aussicht öffnet sich hier in die Zukunft für die Kunst sowohl, als für ihn [R.] insbesondere! [...] Wohl ihm! dass sich die Waagschale seiner Verdienste mit jedem Tage immer tiefer senkt und die Achtung des Publikums in eben den Graden, immer höher steigt." Das schrieb ein Mann wenige Jahre bevor ihn wegen seiner Sympathien zur Französischen Revolution zunächst die Beurlaubung, schließlich die fristlose Entlassung aus seinem hochdotierten Amt trieb. Er und seine Familie waren gezwungen, für einige Zeit das Land zu verlassen, bevor er sich in seinem Gutshaus und Landschaftsgarten in Giebichenstein /Halle erneut ein Refugium schaffen konnte, in dem es ihm gelang, zum "Herbergsvater der Romantik" zu werden. Über seine wirtschaftliche Hoch-Zeit als geachteter preußischer Hofkapellmeister, in der er auf der westlichen Seite der Friedrichstraße einen großzügigen Haushalt unterhielt, berichtet der Tieck-Biograph Rudolf Köpke, dass es "in Berlin vielleicht kein Haus" gab, "das für die Fortbildung einer emporkeimenden Dichterkraft eine bessere Schule gewesen wäre, als das des Kapellmeisters Reichardt. Es war ein Sammelplatz für Künste und Künstler."Hinter dem Komponisten lag ein wechselvoller Werdegang, denn am 25.11.1752 war er als Sohn des Stadtpfeifers und Lautenisten Johann Reichardt in Königsberg geboren und "fast in Armuth erzogen" worden.
