Objective The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment with 8% arginine on the immediate and 6-month bond strength (BS) of adhesive systems and surface morphology of dentin. Materials and Methods Dentin bovine specimens (5 × 5 mm) were allocated into following pretreatments: without pretreatment (conventional technique, C) or exposure to arginine solution (A) for 5 minutes prior to tooth restoration. The adhesive procedure was performed using (n = 12): 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Scotchbond Multipurpose—SBMP [C+SBMP and A+SBMP]); 2-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Single Bond 2 - SB [C+SB and A+SB]); or 2-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil SE Bond - CSEB [C+CSEB and A+CSEB]). After 24 hours, the composite resin restorations were evaluated immediately and after 6 months of water storage using a microshear test and fracture pattern. The dentin surface exposed to A was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The immediate BS data were submitted to a two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test, and the long-term BS results were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). Results There was a significant decrease in immediate and 6-month BS for the A+SB and A+CSEB groups, which differed statistically from the C group. The fracture pattern was predominantly adhesive for SB and CSEB adhesive for C and A. The SEM images presented a different conditioning pattern of the dentin exposed to A. Conclusion The dentin pretreatment with arginine interfered negatively in the immediate and long-term BS of the simplified adhesive system. However, the SBMP adhesive was not affected by arginine pretreatment presenting the most satisfactory results.
Root resorption is characterized by the loss of cementum and / or dentin from the tooth root as a result of internal or external odontoclastic action. This case reports a premature cervical root resorption of deciduous teeth in an 8-year-old boy. Large root resorption on the mesial faces of the maxillary and mandibular right and left deciduous canines (teeth #53, #63, #73 and #83), with asymptomatic pulp involvement, was detected during routine radiographic examination for orthodontic planning. The patient was managed with extraction of the affected teeth using two different techniques: conventional and alternative. The conventional technique, forceps, was used for the maxillary and mandibular left canines (teeth #63 and #73). And alternative technique using the periotome device, usually required for extraction during dental implant surgery, was used for the maxillary and mandibular right canines (teeth #53 and #83). The periotome device showed to be an alternative to improve pediatric surgery due to better patient behavior and healing, and to reduced procedure length.
Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o pré-tratamento da dentina com arginina a 8% na resistenência de união (RU) imediata de diferentes sistemas adesivos. 72 blocos bovinos de dentina (5 x 5 mm) foram aleatorizados em protocolos de pré-tratamento (n=12): A) técnica convencional-sem tratamento prévio; B) solução de arginina a 8% por 5 minutos. Um sistema adesivo convencional de 3 passos [Scothbond Multipurpose, SBMP], um sistema adesivo convencional de 2 passos [Single Bond 2, SB]; e um sistema autocondicionante de 2 passos [Clearfil SE Bond, CSEB] foram utilizados. As amostras foram armazenadas a 37 °C por 24 horas em água destilada e submetidas ao teste de microcisalhamento (Mpa), análise do padrão de fratura e análise morfológica da superfície dentinária em Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Os dados foram submetidos a ANOVA dois fatores e Tukey (α=0,05). O pré-tratamento da dentina com arginina a 8% não afetou a RU de SBMP, entretanto interferiu negativamente na RU dos sistemas adesivos SB e CSEB.
