RESUMO Objetivo: fazer um diagnóstico dos problemas estruturais do campus da Universidade Federal de São Carlos a fim de garantir o acesso e permanência de pessoas com limitações temporárias ou permanentes. Material e Métodos: Através de observações dos espaços e de entrevistas com alunos, professores, funcionários e visitantes, idosos, portadores de deficiências físicas, sensoriais e de dificuldades de locomoção, esta pesquisa identificou os problemas de acessibilidade mais sérios no campus. Resultados: Os dados coletados evidenciaram a existência de barreiras arquitetônicas em várias partes do campus que dificultam ou mesmo impedem a acessibilidade. As calçadas e rampas foram o alvo mais freqüente dos entrevistados, tanto por sua ausência, como por sua má conservação ou problemas de estrutura (no caso das rampas). A necessidade de readaptação do Restaurante Universitário também mereceu uma atenção especial. Os resultados sugeriram ainda a necessidade de uma campanha educativa para conscientização da população interna (alunos, funcionários e professores) acerca do uso correto dos dispositivos instalados para facilitar a acessibilidade (como é o caso dos elevadores), evitando seu mau uso e formando uma comunidade cidadã, onde o respeito às diferenças seja preservado. Conclusão: A amostra de participantes ofereceu informações muito relevantes que direcionaram os trabalhos de adaptações realizadas e novas construções nos três campi da universidade. SUMMARY Objective: The objective This study was to diagnose São Carlos Federal University´ structural problems to guarantee the access of disabled people. Material and methods: By means of observation and interviews with students, teachers, employees, visitors, elderly people, people with physical and sensorial disabilities and people with moving difficulties, it was possible to identify the most serious accessibility problems in the campus. Results: The data collected identified architectural obstacles that made accessibility difficult and even impossible in many parts of the campus. Sidewalks and ramps were the most frequent aim of commentaries, either because of their absence or their bad conservation and structural problems (concerning the ramps). The necessity of readaptation of the Universitary Restaurant also seemed to deserve special attention. Moreover, it was pointed the necessity of an educational campaign to make the campus´ users (students, teachers and employees) aware of the correct use of the device installed to make accessibility easier, avoiding its bad use and forming a community of citizens, in which respect to differences is preserved. Conclusion: The sample of participants provided relevant contributions that lead to alterations projects that will be carried out in the three campi of the university.
