Resumo: Este artigo tem como objetivo entender como um dicionário, escrito por um jesuíta alemão no século XViii, foi utilizado como instrumento de aprendizado da língua geral na Amazônia. o documento analisado é entendido como parte da política linguística jesuítica, a partir da qual o aprendizado de línguas era de fundamental importância para a ação missionária. o conceito de mediação cultural será apropriado, pois o dicionário é interpretado como um instrumento linguístico essencial para o missionário, como mediador, aprender o idioma indígena e realizar seu trabalho de conversão. Primeiramente, buscou-se delinear, em linhas gerais, como se formou a política jesuítica de línguas na América portuguesa. Em seguida, foi realizada uma contextualização histórica do manuscrito. Por fim, foram analisados indícios encontrados nos verbetes que elucidam o processo de confecção do dicionário, a trajetória missionária do autor e seu aprendizado da língua geral.Palavras chave: dicionário. Amazônia colonial.Abstract: the aim of this article is to understand how a dictionary, written by a German Jesuit in the eighteenth century, was used as a tool for learning the "língua geral" in the Amazon region. the analyzed document is understood as a part of Jesuit linguistic politics, in which the learning of languages was of fundamental importance for missionary activity. the concept of cultural mediation will be discussed because the dictionary is interpreted as an essential linguistic tool for the missionary, as a mediator, to aid his conversion work. firstly, this article intends to give a general outline of Jesuit linguistic politics in Portuguese America. secondly, the manuscript is placed in its historical context. finally, indications found in the entries that clarify the process of dictionary making, the missionary trajectory of the author, and his learning of the Língua Geral are analyzed.
Em 1756, um ano após a promulgação das primeiras leis reformadoras do futuro Marquês de Pombal para a Amazônia portuguesa, o jesuíta Lourenço Kaulen redigiu, enquanto missionário da aldeia de Piraguiri no rio Xingu, uma carta-ânua. Nela, além das atividades pastorais regulares, ele descreveu sua expulsão violenta da missão. Integrante do grupo de padres “tapuitinga”, ou centro-europeus, que vieram no início da década de 1750, Kaulen é um dos primeiros religiosos a ser acusado de desobediência à nova legislação. A carta-ânua, além de relatar o precário cotidiano numa missão remota no interior amazônico, constitui uma das primeiras referências a uma ação antijesuítica que, por sinal, contou com a implicação direta dos neófitos indígenas.
O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar uma transcrição do primeiro capítulo de um catecismo manuscrito anônimo em língua geral e parcialmente em latim, produzido, com muita probabilidade, por um dos jesuítas de língua alemã que atuaram na Amazônia em meados do século XVIII. O capítulo trata sobre os temas do nome do “cristão” e da prática do sinal da cruz. A transcrição é acompanhada de notas com as traduções para o português, sendo precedida por um texto de apresentação com hipóteses acerca da autoria do catecismo, o contexto histórico da produção do documento e a situação linguística das missões do Grão-Pará no setecentos.
