Volatile organic compounds have been measured at two relatively large sewage treatment plants. Quantitative estimation of benzene, toluene, m.p-xylene, o-xylene and isopropylbenzene have been made for raw sewage, sewage after primary treatment and after biological treatment. Also measurements of 14 different volatile organic compounds in the ambient air, close to screens, and the air above (0.5 m above) aeration tanks have been done. Tests on air stripping of added volatile organic compounds to clean water have been performed in parallel in the laboratory. The removal of examined VOCs in full scale treatment plants was very much below the expected level. In the low loaded activated sludge process the removal was between 2 and 56%, depending on the compound considered. The behavior of volatile organic compounds in laboratory tests was very much different. The concentration of VOCs in the air of rooms where bar racks have been installed was found to be very high. The concentration of toluene in the ambient air could be as high as 460 μg/m3.
IMPACT OF SONIFICATION TIME ON VFA GENERATION AND CHANGES OF TOTAL SOLIDS DURING SEWAGE SLUDGE ANAEROBIC DIGESTION PROCESSABSTRACT Application of ultrasonic fields with a power of 300 W and the frequency 25 kHz, causes changes in the sewage sludge and in content of volatile fatty acids produced during the sludge anaerobic digestion. These changes depend on the applicable sonification time. The most favourable time was assumed to be 15 minutes. The differences have been observed at concentrations of volatile fatty acids generated, although 1/5 of the sludge volume was sonificated. This resulted in an average 15% increase in VFA content compared to non-sonificated sludge. At the same time, a higher degree of sludge organic matter decomposition was obtained, which had a positive effect on the sludge stabilization. The sludge disintegration via sludge sonification caused also a higher reduction in sludge weight (total solids). Keywords: sewage sludge, volatile fatty acids (VFA), sonification time, digestion. WSTĘPZaostrzenie przepisów z zakresu gospodarki osadowej (zakaz składowania osadów na wysypiskach odpadów komunalnych) oraz fakt, że procesy przeróbki osadów ściekowych pochła-niają około 70% kosztów oczyszczania ścieków, spowodowały wzrost zainteresowania metodami podnoszącymi efektywność przebiegu procesów, którym osady są poddawane. Jednym z ważniej-szych procesów biochemicznych jest stabilizacja osadów, realizowana poprzez beztlenową fermentację. Poprawę efektywności przebiegu fermentacji można uzyskać między innymi poprzez nadźwiękawianie osadu. Fale ultradźwiękowe powodują zwiększenie stopnia dyspersji oraz dezintegrację komórek bakteryjnych osadu. Wraz ze zniszczeniem ścian komórkowych bakterii następuje uwolnienie substancji organicznych do osadu, gdzie ulegają biochemicznemu rozkłado-wi. Dostarczona w ten sposób materia organiczna przyspiesza szybkość hydrolizy [Wolny, 2005] oraz intensyfikuje i skraca cały proces [Zawieja, 2009[Zawieja, , 2010. Biodegradowalność substancji organicznych w ściekach i osadach wzrasta wraz ze wzrostem stężenia tych związków w postaci roz-
