INTRODUÇÃOOs revestimentos refratários das panelas de siderurgia estão expostos ao ambiente severo do processo de refinaria secundária, envolvendo elevadas temperaturas, escórias agressivas e elevados tempos de residência [1,2]. Neste contexto, estão inseridos os concretos aluminosos contendo espinélio. A incorporação de espinélio em concretos de alta alumina auxilia na diminuição do desgaste no revestimento, por meio do aumento da resistência à corrosão de tais materiais [3].O espinélio é uma fase cristalina formada pela reação entre a alumina e a magnésia, em temperaturas entre 1100 o C e 1400 o C, possuindo excelentes propriedades refratárias, tais como alta resistência mecânica, elevada resistência à corrosão e à erosão, alta refratariedade e estabilidade química.
Panelas de refino secundário do aço apresentam importante papel na cadeia produtiva da indústria siderúrgica. O adequado desempenho destas está atrelado ao seu revestimento refratário, composto em sua maior parte por concretos espinelizados que protegem a carcaça metálica do contato direto com o aço fundido. No entanto, o desgaste causado pela ciclagem térmica compromete a sua vida útil, aumentando a necessidade de parada para reparo e elevando os custos operacionais. A degradação por choque térmico pode ser minimizada por meio da incorporação de mecanismos de tenacificação que dificultam a propagação das trincas. O objetivo deste trabalho é incorporar estes mecanismos nesta classe de concretos, variando-se o tamanho e a pureza dos grãos de magnésia, que é uma das matérias-primas utilizadas na formação de espinélio in-situ em concretos aluminosos. Os resultados indicam que as diferenças microestruturais na porosidade e no microtrincamento causadas pelos distintos tamanhos e purezas de MgO alteraram o dano sofrido por choque térmico.
A literatura indica diversos tipos de ensaios e diferentes métodos de avaliação de dano por choque térmico. Adicionalmente sabe-se que, em determinadas aplicações, esse tipo de dano é um dos principais responsáveis pela degradação do revestimento refratário. Neste contexto e buscando a melhor forma de reproduzir as condições em serviço do revestimento refratário, o presente trabalho foi realizado visando analisar qual tipo de ensaio de choque térmico e método de avaliação do dano são os mais adequados para avaliar o desempenho destes materiais. Essa análise foi baseada em uma revisão bibliográfica e resultados obtidos em laboratório, em que se comparou e avaliou as vantagens e desvantagens dos métodos mais relevantes encontrados na literatura. Por fim, com o auxilio da ferramenta SWOT foi possível verificar se o método adotado pelos autores desse trabalho é adequado para auxiliar na seleção do refratário para aplicação em calcinadores de leito fluidizado.

Concretos aluminosos contendo espinélio são comumente usados para tal finalidade, uma vez que a incorporação desta fase aumenta significativamente a resistência à corrosão, contribuindo para a diminuição do desgaste no revestimento [3].Além de resistir à corrosão, esses refratários devem suportar também as tensões termomecânicas decorrentes da ciclagem térmica e do gradiente térmico gerado pela diferença de temperatura entre a face quente e a face fria [4]. Estas tensões promovem a formação de trincas que aumentam a penetração do metal líquido, diminuindo a vida útil do revestimento. Estudos mostram que o dano por choque térmico pode comprometer o bom desempenho obtido pela incorporação do espinélio, tornando-se fator determinante no tempo de vida útil dos revestimentos [5].A deterioração no material causada pelo choque térmico pode ser minimizada por meio de mecanismos que dificultem a propagação das trincas geradas pelas tensões termomecânicas.
