Los caminos antiguos representan una compleja y enriquecedora herramienta arqueológica para la investigación. Su característica maleable al paso del tiempo implementa siempre nuevas perspectivas en torno a este y deja una evidencia que ancla al pasado con dinámicas de nuestra actualidad, superpuestas en el lapso de siglos. Mediante una metodología etnográfica y el uso de fuentes documentales tradicionales y digitales, el presente artículo pretende dilucidar los usos modernos que se les da a los antiguos caminos del cantón Sígsig-Azuay, zona de estudio cuya actividad humana puede rastrearse hasta el período precerámico, esto con el objetivo de evidenciar las formas de conservación y mantenimiento de prácticas de movilidad humana fuera de una intencionalidad implícita, además de generar un discurso multidisciplinario en el que toda la comunidad pueda participar activamente en el mejoramiento de las labores económicas y culturales, así como en la producción de nuevos aportes a la arqueología nacional.
