RESUMO No Alto Solimões, o Brasil faz fronteira com o Peru e com a Colômbia, onde existe uma área de livre comércio e um comércio livre sem fronteiras. O objetivo deste artigo é propor a tradição como um conceito sociomaterial da cultura de mercado, desvelando o protagonismo do comerciante no teatro do comércio. Pretende-se descrever a cultura de mercado de Benjamin/BR, de Islândia/PE e de Letícia/CO; e interpretar a tradição do comércio na fronteira amazônica. Dando voz aos atores do mercado, apresento uma pesquisa qualitativa com observações e entrevistas. Este estudo contribui com o desenvolvimento da Consumer Culture Theory ao desenvolver o tema: culturas de mercado. Versando sobre as práticas de comerciantes e consumidores, gizo um retrato do varejo e do consumo no extremo do Amazonas. Entre benjaminenses, islandenses e leticianos existe uma relação de dependência de produtos, uma tradição em que as pessoas trocam mercadorias, crenças e costumes. A cultura de consumo local é influenciada pela cultura de consumo global. Em reflexo, o consumo de massa é influenciado pelo consumo regional.
