Een groep olifanten, weggevlucht voor een naderende oorlog, belandt op een vreedzaam eiland. Maar wat is de prijs voor deze vrede? Dit vraagstuk en de ontmoeting met de beren (een van de weinige soorten die op het eiland leven) 'hakken erin' bij de olifanten en veranderen hun blik op zichzelf en de wereld. Dit fragment uit een niet eerder gepubliceerd verhaal getiteld Dalmar, Dritta en de Prachtige Barbier beschrijft de eerste ontmoeting tussen het olifantje Dalmar en het berinnetje Dritta.'Een twee, een twee, een twee…' Het olifantje Dalmar sluit zich vanaf een afstand aan bij een kolonne beertjes die in stevig marstempo passeert. Dalmar, minstens zo dapper als zijn moeder, is er in zijn eentje op uitgetrokken om het binnengebied van het nieuwe eiland te verkennen. Maar algauw vindt hij de optocht van de beertjes saai en wordt zijn aandacht gevangen door geuren en kleuren, zo sterk en zo fel als hij nog nooit heeft meegemaakt.Plotseling beseft hij dat hij wordt omringd door allerlei tinten geel, groen, oranje, blauw en rood. En dan die geuren, wel duizend onbekende varianten, die hem zo overweldigen dat hij de groep beertjes uit het oog verliest. Om niet ook zijn hoofd te verliezen, blijft hij staan. Als verlamd is hij door al die herfstpracht die hij nooit eerder heeft gezien of geroken. Hij staat daar, als aan de grond genageld, totdat hij voelt dat er iemand van achteren op hem springt. Kribbig gooit het olifantje wie of wat het ook is op de grond.'Wat zijn dat voor manieren!' zegt Dalmar, terwijl hij zijn slurf uitsteekt naar een grappig, ondeugend berinnetje.'Oo, jij bent helemaal geen stuk rots… leef je dan?' vraagt Dritta, het berinnetje. 'Jazeker. Ik ben Dalmar de olifant, exemplaar uit de familie Loxodonta africana orleansi, en, zoals ik sinds kort weet, ook verwant aan de Doejongs.' 'Sorry, ik dacht dat je een steen was,' zegt Dritta, en ze slaat direct haar hand voor haar mond om Dalmar niet recht in zijn gezicht uit te lachen. Ze kan zich niet inhouden en begint te schateren. 'Hahaha, ja, haha, ik vond het al vreemd. Haha, hihihi.' Dritta is niet te stoppen, ze rolt gierend over de grond en imiteert met haar arm de slurf. Lachend en proestend vraagt ze of dat lange uitsteeksel zijn neus is.Geweldig, hier wordt er gelachen om mijn neus en niet om mijn veel te grote oren, bedenkt Dalmar blij. Hij kan maar niet geloven dat hij op een plek is aanbeland waar olifanten kunnen worden aangezien voor stenen. De gedachte dat hij ergens is waar niets, nada, niente bekend is over olifanten, waar ze zelfs verward worden met stenen, maakt hem dolblij. Hij wordt helemaal vrolijk als hij bedenkt dat dus ook niemand iets weet over hun oren en alle vormen en maten die ze kunnen hebben. Op deze plek, zo ver weg van huis, vallen zijn veel te grote oren niet eens op. Ook al hebben zijn moeder, zijn tante Ester en alle andere olifanten uit de kudde hem altijd
